Re: Johnson Sea Horse 5hp
Hi Paddy,
Your motor is a late 1940s, early 1950s model depending on the serial number. In any case, there's a lot of used parts ou there for it, but not much new stuff anymore. Johnons built a LOT of TD-20s and their close siblings in the TD and TN series.
I would start by cleaning and gapping the points (at .020") and try it again. After that, have the condensers checked. Those coils usually hold up fairly well, so I'm betting on the points or condensers.
As for the leaky fuel, it's probably a sodden carburetor float - not uncommon. Dry it out and reseal it with shellac. Make sure the carb and your gas tank are spotless. If the tank has any crud stuck to the surfaces, a few nuts and washers thrown in with some lacquer thinner, followed by some vigourous shaking, should loosen it up.
I've got some parts for those TD and might be able to help you out if you get in a bind....
- Scott
