I recently bought a boat with a vintage Johnson Sea Horse 6hp engine. It states the engine is made in Belgium and the type is J6BALCRM with serial number B003830. I have not been able to find any information about the engine.

Currently it is not starting properly and runs only for 10-20 seconds.

That's a 1984, Gaston, which is not at all old for a small JohnnyRude.

Sounds like it needs attention to the fuel supply system. If it only runs for a few seconds the fuel you pumped into the carb with the primer bulb is not being replaced.

Things to check:

Fuel tank vent and pickup for restrictions.
Fuel lines and connectors for restrictions and air leaks.
Fuel pump.

Good luck. :)

Many thanks! I think it looks like a vintage because the previous owner did not take too good care of it.

Thanks for the tips. I am going to check the fuel system elements you mention and hope to be doing some nice cruising along Amsterdam's canals soon. (Might you be in the country one of these days...you have my email)

Hello Gaston....Let me add a little to JB's always good advice....

If the engine starts only when the choke is pulled and dies after pushing it back in, the carb probably is in need of an over haul. These little 6's are great little runners when tuned up. Give some thought to a service manual to help in the maint. of the engine.

Good Luck and thanks for posting.
