To update the motor and not worry about a pressurized fuel tank, find a fuel pump and by-pass cover plate from a '60-'61 and a motor side single line fuel connector and convert it to a single fuel line and use 50:1 mix.

To Burroak:

Please be very careful about recommending fuelil ratios for older johnnyrudes. You're incorrect on this one. It requires a 24:1 ratio. All the johnnyrudes from the 50s use that ratio.

If someone followed your recommendation, they could ruin a good old outboard. There are a number of people on this forum who know these old outboards very well. Please let them make such recommendations unless you are absolutely sure of what you are advising.

CAt is 100% correct. the conversion to the single line is actually very easy. just did it for the first time. but running 50-/1 in this engines is suicide. as Scatty said, needle bearing on each end , but brass bushing on the rods. lots of lube required.

I appreciate everyone's replies.

The recoil appears to be missing (thank you for the picture TD) the piece that is held onto the little metal post by the c-clip. In addition, the recoil is not smooth and is very gritty and won't recoil without 10 minutes of help. I will send a PM TD.

I will be sure to run the right oil !

Let's resurrect this thing!

I'm not getting into the oil fray, but just for the record, that motor has needle/roller bearings on both ends of the rods, not bushings.

I sure hope you appreciate the free CD manual that I priority mailed to you. If you didn't receive it, let me know.

The fuel ratio that I referred to was given to me by Joe Reeves and others on www.marineengines.com when I was sourcing parts to convert my 18 to a single fuel line. I was pleasantly surprised since I intend to use it as a trolling motor and could use a single fuel supply. Since my original reply to your thread, I have gotten advice that ranges from 16:1 (since some oil is good, more is better) 24:1 that's what OMC said in 1958) 40:1 fouls plugs less, smokes less, etc) 50:1 since the modern 2 cycle oils are so much more developed than the oil available in the day). Opinions on fuel ratios are much like bung holes, everyone has one. When in doubt, go to the default. If something happens to the motor, you will be comforted to know it was not the fuel.

You know more than I and will file that in my cranium cavity..(I have a CD12 on the bench with torched wrist pin bushings, so ..well.. too much info, not enough brain! )​
