Its not that i don't know that little, its just to old for me :D. bought it with a small fishing boat. 2 pulls and it starts right up. now keeping it running for more then 2 min is another thing. I dont think i am getting them set right or something.

(Carburetor Adjustments - Two Adjustable N/Vs)
(J. Reeves)

Initial settings are: Bottom high speed = seat gently, then open 1 turn out. Top slow speed = seat gently, then open 1-1/2 turns.

Setting the high and low needle valves properly:

NOTE: For engines that DO NOT have a shift selection, obviously there is no NEUTRAL position. Simply lower the rpms to the lowest setting to obtain the low speed needle va /lve adjustment.

(High Speed) Start engine (it will run pretty rough), shift into forward gear, take up to full throttle. In segments of 1/8 turn, wating for the engine to respond between turns, start turning in the bottom high speed needle valve. You'll reach a point whereas the engine will either start to die out or spit back (sounds like a mild backfire). At that point, back out the needle valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest setting.

(Low Speed) Slow the engine down to where it just stays running. Shift into neutral. Again in segments of 1/8 turns, start to turn the top needle valve in. Wait a few seconds for the engine to respond. As you turn the valve in, the rpms will increase. Lower the rpms again to where the engine will just stay running. Eventually you'll hit the point where the engine wants to die out or it will spit back. Again, at that point, back out the valve 1/4 turn. Within that 1/4 turn, you'll find the smoothest slow speed setting.

When you have finished the above adjustments, you will have no reason to move them again unless the carburetor fouls/gums up from sitting, in which case you would be required to remove, clean, and rebuild the carburetor anyway.

If you can't keep it running and adjustments don't help, there are two things that are common problems.
The filter in the gas tank. Remove the fuel line and see if you get a good flow from the tank.
The ignition coils. They are always bad on those motors unless somebody has already replaced them.

That is a terrible engine and should not be allowed on the water.

As a public service, I am willing to dispose of it for you. Send it to The Hideout. :)

So, JB, just how many of those eggbeaters do you have at the Hideout? Try putting four of them on the back of a little aluminum boat and link up all the tiller handles and timing/throttle levers. Should scoot right along, and think of the visual effect. :D

I do not have a need to scoot anymore, CAT. One of those on a li'l tinny would suit me just fine.:)

I can vouch for the stoutness of those little 3's... My Dad's was in storage for 4-5 years, I pulled the plugs, carb cleaned them, put them back in, filled the lower unit, filled with 50:1 and 2 pulls later, she fires up- that motor has NEVER let us down.

And yes, shameless forum site plug sitting in the toolbox! :)

The moment of truth captured- I video'd the moment for my Dad to see how many pulls it took, and she didn't disappoint. :)

thanks to tashasdaddy this thing is puring like a kitten. Now if i could get it to roar like a tiger we would be doing good. 12 foot fishing boat with 3 people in it i think i might need a little more power. Got caught in the rain on saturday and it took 20 min to get across the lake. Dont want that to happen again.
