Very, very new to outboards & this forum. I just bought a Seahorse 3hp and its manual. Can't find the answer to my questions in the manual! (1) is there a way to run the motor without the prop turning? (2) what is the purpose of the "button" next to the choke, that pushes the control faceplate inwards about 1/4" , it's clearly hinged on the bottom?

Need the model number. It is on the little plate riveted to the clamp.

Answer to (1) No
Answer to unasked question 1.5 ;) No reverse. The motor rotates 360 deg.
Answer to unasked question 1.75: Factory was 16:1. I run my old 3 hp's at 20:1
Answer to (2) No idea.

Need the model number to give positive answers.

Looks like you have a JW-10 or 11. Answer to #2 (I think). Without looking at your motor, I think it has a fake "button" on the front that does absolutely nothing. Take another look and see if that isn't true.

The front panel is held in place with springs, so naturally if you shove on it, it will move.

Thanks for the info!
The name plate says model JW-11 S/N 1318696. I have included a close in photo of the motor, the 'button' I mentioned is the raised "h3p" insignia upper left on the faceplate opposite the choke. Supreme Admiral says the faceplate is spring mounted but moving it does nothing. Seems like nothing happening when I move it, so I guess that's about the size of things. Thanks again, all!

Thanks for the info! You are right, the nameplate says JW-11. Please see my response to tx1961whaler, you diagnosed the "button" correctly also I think. Thanks much!

The moving plate was originally intended to lock the mixture knobs in place and allow them to be adjusted when the button is pushed in.

I don't think I have seen one that worked since sometime in the '50s.
