Re: johnson seahorse 5.5hp, hasn't run in 20+ years

okay i know that i have to get the compression right, about the points they seem complicated to replace, i'm not sure i will replace them, but i will the coils and condensers. Do the points have to be changed if they look in good condition, there was only one spark plug that sparked when tested?

there was no oil in the lower unit when i checked it and streaks of oil on the foot, so is a lower unit seal kit also needed?. Here's some pics of motor and lower unit
What's the small metal tubes that the red tape is holding together for?

I am not a mechanic and just by looking at the oil build-up below prop, it is leaking and needs a resealing kit, right?

that motor is in great shape! if it were me, since it had no oil, id go with the rebuild on the gearcase. those tubes taped to the tiller handle appear to be spare shearpins?

on the sierra site it shows a carb kit with float, but the pic only shows the basic kit? maybe the pic is wrong? (there are two different kits offered, and both look the same)

i got the cylinder head gasket today paid $8 for 2. All i'm doing now is waiting to borrow someones compression tester. I checked tank it had some rust inside, outside tank but not a lot metal wool and gas made short work of it.

yep i thought i was paying 8 for 1 but when he handed me the gasket it looked thick and sure enough there were 2 says on package standard 2 pack. Is that cheap or expensive for gaskets?

Re: johnson seahorse 5.5hp, hasn't run in 20+ years

good news compression was 75 lbs on each cylinder after squirting some oil into the cylinders and pulling crank to work it in. i have ordered an impellar, carb kit with float, 2 coils, points and condensors, and a lower unit reseal kit. I should get that all for around $130 shipped. I also will need a fuel tank reseal kit and an air silencer $60 shipped for those. My final estimate would be about $250

those comp numbers are great tbone! .....and should get better once you run it a bit. you will never get a better ob for $250, and the satisfaction of bringing it life is wonderful! (take lotsa close up pics before every step of dissasembly.....for reference......and bookmark the top secret files for more reference....it always seems to be that one small oversight that can cause so much headaches)
keep posting!!!!! pics always help with answers too!

Re: johnson seahorse 5.5hp, hasn't run in 20+ years

Well the motor is all fixed now, brought on a fishing trip, it ran for about 12 hrs, without a problem, man was it ever smooth, and seemed to have a lot of power. Thanks to all who helped me out. Now how abouts do i go to store it over the winter the manual says to flood the engine, but is there any other ways. I have also heard of sta-bil is this good?

truely great to hear you got it working like it should, those motors do run like a sewing machine when fixed right! (great feeling after all the ups and downs!)
as far as storing for the winter, stabil is good stuff, id also fog the engine down.
will it be stored in a heated space? if not, its a good idea to drain the gearcase and refill it, just in case water did get in, wouldnt be good to have it freeze and break.also store it vertical, as it would sit on a transom.

Re: johnson seahorse 5.5hp, hasn't run in 20+ years

i'll more than likely store it outside, i will change the lower unit oil, fog engine, it's sitting on a stand vertical now, and how do i use sta-bil i mix some with gas, and then i disconnect the gas/air hose, and run it untill it runs out of gas, also do i get the normal sta-bil or the marine sta-bil? thanks

motor sounds great, and pushes your boat along quite well.
