1979 Johnson Seahorse 4 H.P. model# 4w79d
Runs like a champ and this is the first time out on the water with it. I noticed it dosent pee very much. There are 6 tiny holes in the back that just kind of spit water out? is this the way it works?
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
it spits at idle and spits alot harder at full throttle. Im used to seeing a stream of water out the back of motors. but, I guess being this small there wouldnt be that big of a spray?

Suzuki40
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
i have a 9.5 that just kinda spits i think that it has an exhuast bypass that u get water and exhaust out of the holes if its not over heating its working but if you have any doughts change it they are cheap
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
Its not overheating. its just 6 little holes 3 on each side of the back of the shaft housing. There is also a trickle of oil that runs out of those holes too, just a little.

Suzuki40
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
dark oil ??? it sounds like your engine works like mine what you are seeing is oil(per mix) from the exhuast.did you drain the lower unit just to make sure outs not a bad seal in the lower unit ??
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
the oil is a light brown color. but, of course it mixed with water. My lower unit oil, I assume you are talking about the gearcase above the skeg? The oil in there is blue. and when I check it it's blue?

Suzuki40
Re: Johnson seahorse has trouble with cooling water tell-tale
Suzuki,
The small amount of spray you see comming from those 6 little holes is perfectly normal. If you can hold your hand near those holes and your hand gets wet, you're good to go. That motor doesn't have a thermostat or an "overboard indicator" (pee stream), just those little vent holes.
