Re: Johnson Seahorse revival

I think I found the gas leak and that has been patched w/ JB weld. I need to put this motor aside for the next couple of weeks while I work on some other stuff. While it is sitting would it be a good idea to pull the plugs and squirt a solvent or WD-40 into the cylinders to help loosen up the piston rings? Also will I fry my coils if I turn the motor over with the spark plugs left out? Lastly is there a source online for parts / service manuals for the TN-28? I’d still like to know more about this motor and make sure that I’m not missing any parts. Thanks again for all of your tips/help!

Re: Johnson Seahorse revival

I cleaned up the carb, re-assembled everything and got her running on the 2nd try last night.

She smokes like crazy but she seems to start fine with a little priming. I notice gas leaking from what seems to be the bottom of the carb so I'm swapping out the screw washers with rubber/steel sealling washers in hopes that will stop the leak. I broke the neutral lever so I'm not going to put it on the boat until I get that fixed or replaced. Until then I think I'll run it in the barrel for a few minutes each evening to keep the engine fresh and annoy my wife...

With the broken shift lever, your motor is now like its predesessor the TD series such as the venerable TD-20, same 5hp powerhead but no neutral. Straight in-gear operation only.

Now you'll get a feel for what my little Evinrude 2hp is like. Well, if you lose reverse that is.

What type of washers do you all use for the screws on the bottom of the carb? Nylon, or rubber? I'm still trying to chase down the leaks on the bottom of the carb, I'm hoping it is coming from the original washers and not something else.

In reference to the washers, I just picked up some #10 plastic washers at Lowe's and used those on mine, they seem to be working fine.
