RK-29 is a 1967 short shaft. RKL is long shaft. Yours obviously is a long shaft, but it may have been converted from short.

Looks like the beginning of a project.

The shaft length should be chosen so that the AV plate above the prop is as close to being level with the bottom of the transom as possible .

The straight section between the main part of the leg and the top of the gearcase looks like the 5" spacer that makes a standard shaft into a long shaft

RK-29 makes it a 1967 model.

It will use a 50:1 fuel mix

The Electramatic should use a Type C oil in the gearcase rather than the normal 80W-90 Hi Vis oil

A small or medium sized automotive starter battery should be adequate .The engine has belt a driven generator which should provide power for battery charging.

Look at the topics covered on the Engine FAQs board. http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engine-repair-and-maintenance/engine-frequently-asked-questions-faq There are some very relevant ones. In particular " Awakening a sleeping outboard"

That wee red lever is for starting and fast idle in nuetral.---The big lever shifts the motor and then advances the throttle.--Generator must be working to keep battery charged and to provide power for the shift.
