One of the best WATER COOLED outboards ever made, provided it is well cared for.

A Service Manual will tell you how to care for it.

Good luck. :)

It's a 5 hp from 1946-1949. It's old enough to require more difficult part searches and possibly part substitutions. The one thing that has to work is the WATERPUMP. It has a molded rubber impeller that goes to hell with age. It's located right behind the propeller (if my manual is correct).

Keep an eye on ebay...I have parts that will be up for auction come winter. I have them all away for the summer.......

The water pump has what's called a Rotor that oscillates from an eccentric on the propshaft. It's a terribly inefficient pump, but quite durable. But they do wear out and they're very hard to find. The hole in the middle enlarges. I put a plastic bushing in one and it seemed to work again. There should be a fine mist coming out of the back near the waterline.

The other tough find is the float in the carb. It's just cork. I went to St. Vinnies and bought a bottle with a large enough cork to carve down and shellac. Worked fine. :)

Another idea on the float, Merc carbs with the side float chambers which look like the float bowl on the your 5horse, use a float that will fit yours. The hole through the middle just needs reamed out a very tiny bit. I've done this twice with these five horses....worked good.
