I have a 1999 225 hp johnson and it has been setting up for about 4 months. The tilt and trim does not work. I can hear the motor running but there is no movement. The batteries will start the engine and appear to be fully charged.Does anyone have an idea where to start trouble shooting.

Two things to check are the manual release valve (it should be screwed all the way in) , and second is the fluid (or lack of it ). This is hard to do if you can't trim it up but if you can get someone to help , undo the release valve and lift the engine all the way up so you can engage the full tilt lock then you can check the fluid.

Since we are on the subject of up&down on the trim tilt what cause's one to drift off it was rebuilt and still drifts off full of fuild but its a pain not haveing it when you want to trim out and can't can any one say or tell me whats going on with it - its a 150 fast track 92 at this point and time open to any thing before fishing season gets here

It means that its will not hold the wait of the motor and I can't plain ,, not leaking fuild at all was thinking maybe leaking inside unit ,, it will pick the motor up but drifts off in no time at all,,, it was rebuilt but didn't stop the driftting as I thought it would

Did you have the manual release valve replaced when the pump was rebuilt ? 9 times out of 10 this is the problem if it won't hold trim.

rogerd8...Did you have the cylinders rebuilt also? Could be the tilt cylinder leaking through. If the mech isn't careful about putting the piston back into the cylinder, the o-ring can get nicked and leak through. If what's left of my memory serves, there is no parts for the manual release valve in a rebuild kit. You have to get them separate and also get the manual release valve in correctly. Like **** said, start at the manual release and go from there.

OBJim :D

Roger,
When you have the unit tilted UP, spray some soap and water solution on the Manual release valve screw and see if it bubbles up. That should narrow it down a bit!

Seems he did lol,If you checked the fluid I asume the engine is all the way up ? and it won't go down? Did you check if the tilt lock on the starboard ?

janvan...what richard (thanks for changing log in name) is saying is that if you checked the fluid level with the motor down, then you ain't got near enough fluid in it. Check it with the motor up. Use the manual release to get it up (oh boy!) and check it if this is the case.

OBJim :D

janvan
Is the Motor in the up or down position right now? Did you check the Manual release Valve for leakage? Obviously you have been able to get the Motor up, as you stated you have checked the fluid and on my 70 Rude, that is the only way to get to the fill screw.(Maybe yours is different) Is the T & T motor whining pretty good when you hit the switch or is it just humming? In other words, does it sound like it did before, when it did work? Just some general questions to try and narrow it down.

The only way to check the fluid on that style is with the motor up.
