I have 1990 johnson 40 tiller handle with tilt assist. The unit wil hold motor inplace but will not help push motor up like it used to. Can I add oil or is there any maintenance on these. The dealer says it's about $300 to replace

Rick...take a look at the cable that leads to the top of the assist cylinder. It connects to the lever on the tiller handle with a plastic connector. Make sure its not broke.

If it's OK, check the play on the lever. Shouldn't be more than a 1/4" play. It there is, pop off that plastic connector and adjust it to get the required play. Might help.

Let us know the outcome.

These cylinders can't be re-juiced.
