Hi I’m a newbie and just bought my frist boat.
Motor is a johnson 49 hp 1990 and it does not have electric trim it manual.
So my question is does that manual cylinder help you lift the motor or just let you lock it in place?
Second question it’s leaking can I rebuild it
Thanks
(Ps looking for an electric one)

If I run with the cylinder removed unlocked at high speed will it go back and foward and break something or be dangerous?

Helps lift the motor with very little effort. Lock down and release is a different mechanism -- should be a lever on the left side when facing the motor front. Come with a plastic cap on the end, but tend to snap off.

Yes the lever is there and turned towards the back of the unlocked but the cylinder is leaking so it doesn’t assist me at all its just like a damper now it slows the speed I can lift the motor and it just making it worse
How can I had oil to it
I it will probably help it would work like a shock absorber
And the ball and socket on the leaver that opens the release valve do they still sell it cause mine if I remove it to put seal and o-rings in the cylinder it will not last the removal
Thank for your help guys learning fast

Post a model number -- guessing you have a 48. Your best bet might be a donor motor. Part number for the cylinder (48hp) is 0434037. It's around $800(!)

Yes it a 1990 48
Are those cylinder pressed sealed or we can open them like a regular hydraulic cylinder and get too the piston cause if its not sealed I can bring they seal and o-ring and have them matched from my supplier at the shop where work but I can’t touch anything till I can get a new ball and socket for the release valve
And how do they get that top pin out that holds the cylinder
A special tool or puller?

I think once you remove the ball and socket you can remove an e ring then drive the pin out. I have one on my 40 hp I’ll take a closer look tomorrow and see if it looks to be serviceable. The parts should still be available.

So on my 02 model there are two flats on the top to remove the cylinder.
They are small flats and there may be a special tool but in a pinch it looks like you could get a pipe wrench on it.

Pipe wrench already tried won’t move now I spray it morning and nidht with penetrating fluid prolab100 and cheques it with pipe wrench every day will drill a 7/16 hole on the and tap and put a7/16 bolt and try a pull it out with slide hammer puller or weld a long nut on the end and try turn it the use the slide hammerpuller
But how do I remove that rusted up ball and socket without destroying it?
Add a pic of year and model

My socket is plastic and just pops off with a flat head. I see you have a Canadian model so I can’t be of much help.
I would guess your socket had an c clip in it and should just pop off by prying on it but as rusty as it is it may not survive.
