Only year they made that tuner. Ain't sure if'n that's good or bad, but it works okay for me. Far as the mid goes we believe this one to be a Second Effort piece. Meaning the 'holes' are tubes cast, rather than drilled into the mid.

Yours will have the later tuner. Told ya can saw these off but I ain't tried.

Ok i see in the pic yours are above the water line.
Does this effect the back pressure ?? Or is there some gases going through the prop to give some pressure ?

Porting is the same '78 up. Since his is a 1980 it should be same as the higher hp models
The porting is not the same .......the 85 has smaller exhaust ports and are lower in port height.

Hi Faztbullet
I will be porting her to minimum of 140hp spec maybe even a bit more i read a few things on the ports some say square them of and raise the exhaust others say just leave the ports alone ???
So looks like its going to be a toss up whether to do them or not. If i can get feed back from people who have squared them off that would be good. All the info i can get i soak up like a sponge

Like I said I'm not familiar with the 85. However I do have several 90, 115, and 140 blocks. After '77 the ports are all the same.

Did a lil research and prior to '78 the 85 was the smaller bore 1.5 motor. So yes then I would expect the porting to be different.

Perhaps our Scottish friend will pop off an inspection cover and post a pic for us?

The actual diameter of the exhaust hole is smaller on a 85HP than the 115/140HP. It will have to be enlarged and then port to 140 HP spec. Also remember the 9pages were written for race engines and boats under 900lbs. If boat weighs a lot or you going to try and ski/tube the mods need to be toned down for every day use. You gotta cut the exhaust divider and use filler block...you have to turn engine over 6000RPM to see any gain in RPM.

I understand i have to cut divider ect All points taken on board. Is there a way to add the carbs just now to the 85 just so i can run them this season ?

You can add the carbs anytime but will need to rejet HS.......don't expect to see much improvement.

Can i throw this one out to you guys who have "nine paged" What would you do to tone down the mods ?
Would you still scallop the pistons ? If so would it still be by the 1" radius ?
Would the porting be left as is?
Iam talking if you were to build another tuned motor not for racing but for say using every second weekend for a few hours and not look at rebuilding every season?
What would you use from the NIne pages and what would you lose ?

I would shop around for a 'blowed up' post '80 model, cuz of the type III carbs. Preferably a 140 cuz it's already got all the good stuff. Or a '85 or newer prop rated 115. (Same motor just detuned a lil.)

For mods see my post above: Three or so years after reassembly it still fires right up, and runs like a raped ape. Does burn a lil fuel ...

I would just cut the exhaust divider for bubble exhaust, mill out exhaust ports to 140 spec, add reed block stuffers, install tighter heads, add 140carbs and you got a prop rated 115-120hp mota.Good for riding/ski/tube and play. Add a jack plate to dial in set-up

This is what i have sitting in my little work shop. the pics are all prior to cleaning and any mod/polish ect
Bubble back from a 140 = going to lean and polish as much as poss the exhaust tunnel
Carbs and Reeds - Stuffers from a 140 = Lap the reed plates fit a 1980 Air silencer and change to primer choke.
High comp heads from a 140 = Descale and polish ( i also have a set of heads from a 1972 125hp will these be better than the 140s ?)
Last i have just gotten hold of a 1972 125HP crankcase and crank. I think i will be using this as the ports may be more like the 140 ???????
Some advice on that would be good????

The 125 head don't have a place to mount your coils and the 125 block wont fit your midsection......
