The engine I THINK I own is a 1990 Johnson 200 (VJ200SLESE). However, I'm starting to wonder. It's apparent that this is a bit of a Frankenstein engine, in fact the guy that sold it to me said he thinks the powerhead is a factory reman.
When I reinstalled the lower unit I was careful to set the shift rod height at the book specified value (21-15/16), yet I still couldn't get it into reverse. After some trial and error I figured out that the shift rod needed to be adjusted higher to allow it to go into reverse, and I found that the spec for the 150 and 175's is 22-1/16, which is what worked for me (it's amazing that 1/8" makes that much difference).
I know there's supposed to be a welch plug with the engine model stamped in it, but darned if I can find it on this engine. I've also tried tracing the part number of the head (port 333808-3, starb. 333809-4) and crankcase (331007), but so far haven't been able to find any models that they match.
So, any detectives out there that may be able to tell me what else to look at to prove definitively what I've got?
