I know that these were identical, except for cowl and trim, for many years. However, now there are significant differences. Exactly when was the last year that they were the same, model for model?

(Watch this ya'll)

They were never identical. All the good parts became Evinrudes. All the reject parts that OMC couldnt return or scrap were made into Johnsons.

(That ought to liven things up some)

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

Hmm, the story goes around here that Evinrudes were the ones that were defective somehow. Maybe that sentiment caused by the Peterborough plant though. Johnsons outnumber Evinrudes up here by a wide margin.
Even in the '60s and '70s there were some differences - for example in '69 you could have an 18hp Evinrude or a 20hp Johnson, but not the other way around. Don't know so much about the 80s and 90s.

In earlier years, the part numbers were the same. When you needed a part, how did the parts supplier know to give you the good part for the Evinrude or the defective part for the Johnson.

NOTE: My Johnson's about as old as me, but it's not defective in any way.

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

Hmmm, if that's true, Dhadley, how come all I see is old Johnsons out on the lakes here? Besides that, those Evinrude cowlings from the late '50s and '60s were just plain ugly.
Maybe that was it. After a while, folks just got embarrassed by their ugly Evinrudes, while the rest wanted to show off their Johnsons.

(joke fully intentional)

(Stirring the pot)

Hummm...maybe the defective parts were used to build the Gales way back then.....????

(Good one BB & CA)

Ha ha ha!
So would the answer 1997 be true, with the introduction of the Evinrude Fichts?

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

Hey Paul -- the defective Johnsons went to the cold north because OMC hoped they wouldnt be used all that much and could get by the warranty period. (No fair remembering they had 2 year warrantys long ago)

Now this will really get things going --

A good buddy has a 1996 150 Ficht Johnson. Yep, 1996.

For what it's worth - a lot of folks around here referred to the place in Waukegan, IL where they built OMCs not as OMC, not as Evinrude Inc., but as Johnson Motors. The Johnsons therefore must have been the cream of the crop.

Evinrudes are closer in color to Merc than Johnsons are. That means Johnsons are better. :D

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

Evinrude used special paint to make the parts last longer. And the pieces were cast from higher quality alloys. And the technicians that assembled them were specially trained.

Just because 99.9% of the parts were interchangeable a few years ago is purely coincidence. ;)

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

June 21st, to be exact.

There has been so much bonnet switching that one doesn't always know if it is a Johnny, 'Rude, Gale, Sea King, Viking, or any of several other names put on the greatest little engines ever made. The bonnet not only lies about the "brand", it often lies about the HP, too.

They don't care what we call them, they just go, "Purrrrrr".

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

Does where/when they were built factor into the quality?I have a Canadian built Johnson(CJ20CRCUR) but i often see posts with Belgium made ones.I love my '87 Johnson20hp,not one speck of corrosion under the cover and i run in saltwater. It has been a very reliable motor for me.
