Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

the old joke goes:

When an outboard built by OMC was tank tested, if it started on the first crank it was painted blue and called an Evinrude. If it didn't start, then it was painted with Johnson colors and decals.

1998 was the last year they were identical. For '99 to 2001 models, Evinrude had the FICHT and 4-stroke offerings while Johnson was the traditional 2-stroke motor. When Bombardier took over for the 2002 models, Johnson got the 4-strokes.

Prior to 1980 or so, Evinrude was built in Milwaukee and Johnson in Waukegan. Each even had their own sales, service, and warranty teams.

Re: Johnson vs. Evinrude

According to the top-secret "Internal Metallurgy and Engineering Study" that was commisioned by OMC in the early 1960's, (which was not for public dissemination), rigorous testing standards were set for Johnson and Evinrude. Every part was subjected to the most extreme conditions imaginable. Right down to the last nut and bolt.

Because Johnson and Evinrude had their own loyal customer and dealer base that was well established, it was decided not to release the findings, to prevent a massive sell-off of new and used Johnson/Evinrude equipment. However, the executives at OMC wanted to find a way to act on the studies findings, without sending up a red flag to current OMC owners. Hence, all of the parts from Johnson and from Evinrude (that tested to a such a high degree of excellence that was never seen before in marine history) were assembled and released under the Gale name.
Now, you know the rest of the story. :)
And yes, I own a Gale.

Johnsons just look better. Evinrudes are ugly.
