I just bought a Johnson motor for 50$ and the I'd tag is missing.I cant tell what type of motor it is, was wandering if anyone might be able to somewhat recognize what size and year model this is possibly.

The hood has no hp letters on it and is pretty worn out and has been painted

Is there anywhere on the block that might have number or an indication of the hp possibly

It is a 74 / 75 / 76 model.----A 9.9 or 15 hp.-----Size of carburetor bore will tell you.---There may be a disc on the block with model # on it.

Guess why a person would remove the model number and paint the cover the wrong color.

It has the short tiller arm so it is a very early model of 9.9/15 lineage. As racer mentioned there might still be a Silver disk, looks a little like a frost plug, that might have the Serial # on it.

What would be the easiest way to measure the inside of the carb bore?

Maybe the same reason they would sell it for $50-? :)
Probably not much point asking whether there is a clear title.

I'm thinking it might actually be a evinrude possibly from the blue color of everything but the hood.

I bought the motor from a lady that had it for sale up at a local high school sale. She said it was to raise money for the highschool band. Not sure where they got the motor from but I figured for 50$ It seemed like a pretty good deal at the moment but now I'm just wandering if I should sell it for what I paid for it and try to find something else in better shape

I am always amazed how piggish engine owners can be….

in any event looks aside ..I would at least stuff the carb with a rag and start with bath of wd40 and a power wash

then go to a Krudd Buster wash..and another power wash followed with a blow dry

all this if compression is decent

may as well paint it over with white paint ….at least for 50$ you won't have to row

I let pb blaster sit in the cylinders for a couple of days and I got it free, also waited 1 more day and checked the psi and I'm getting 90 on the upper cylinder der and 110 on the lower
would these numbers be good enough to move forward in trying to repair it to running condition???
