Re: johnyrude.....industrial???????

Back in the day I can recall one page in most all OMC catalogs dedicated to their "Commercial" line of outboards. They usually had several mid sized motors aimed at professional fishermen, dock repairers, etc. Quote from 1994...."beefed up with hardened drive shafts and HD water pumps with SS liners.....etc".

Re: johnyrude.....industrial???????

Some of the "commercial" grade motors were built stronger or without certain features, such as VRO on OMC's. So the lack of features make them worth more to some folks, less to others. But the real question for a used motor is not whether it was built commercial, but whether it was used commercial. It's like why you wouldn't buy a used car if it had been a taxi.

i do know some history on the motor, it was sitting in a heated basement for the last ten years, used for two summers before that ..and used hard, mounted on the stern of a 12ft v-hull "hydro-plane". the motor was ran by a teenager, and i watched the boat.....airborn as much as much it was in the water. would it be worth $200 bucks.....or should i just forget about it?

$200 for a running 20 is fine. What year? I know the 18's and 25's and have a merc 20; don't recall OMC's

As for the commercial grades the 48 special and 115 (I think) special were 2 commercials from the 90's.

Re: johnyrude.....industrial???????

i havent had a chance to get into the sellers basement, but the motor, if memory serves me correct, looks like a mid 1980's model . i could have bought the boat , motor, and trailer 10 years ago for $1000 , but watching the boat on the water, and hearing the motor rev when the prop was out of the water......and it was out a lot, made me a bit leary. how much over-revving will a motor take? (i baby my motors.....probably too much! lol)
