Re: Jonhson 40hp vro fuel problem? please help

Hi my friend chadpcb
I had opened the carbs again, and I sent you photos
The main orifice is very difficult to remove, but it is very clean, hole over 1mm, I don't think it is need to remove and check, in your scematic 33 part doen't exist, but I think you put it for testing purposes?
You will see the pictures, all as say in the diagram you sent me are checked, is something else to look for in the carbs?

The certain is when my engine do this problem, pressing the choke, fixes the problem for a little time

Because mice had gone in the motor, ( I had fixed cables ok ) is this problem has to do something with the electronic ignition?

Re: Jonhson 40hp vro fuel problem? please help

Hi my friend, thanks for the help
I sent you the photos, I have unmounted the carbs as you see

A quick follow up to help you. The engine was not used for 2 years, the last time I used it 2 years ago was ok.
I opened it this year and mice had got in, and some tubes were eaten, and some cables were cut, I changed the lines, I fixed the cables ( I am electronic technitian ) correctly, and the problem is the above..
When I disabled vro the engine doen't stop, but the sound you hear it is not the same it varies, the engine is a little dificult to gain full speed, but when I press the choke it is getting better, I opened the carbs checked the high speed jet and the other you told me , but I see was ok. very strange.......

Go ahead and put it back together.

I would take a closer look at the coil to make sure it is firing properly.

Crank the motor
Then pull one spark plug wire at a time. Take note if it dies or stays running.
If it dies on one and not the other then the coil is bad.

Crank it up at night complete darkness to see if you can see sparks around the coil. If you do then change coil it has a crack in it.

Everything else looks good. Once you have everything back together take a picture of the linkage side at neutral and Full throttle. Not running of course.

Re: Jonhson 40hp vro fuel problem? please help

Hi my friend
I had put all back together, I hear the engine perfect, out of the water, now I have to check it in...
I pulled one by one the cables from the sparks at idle, the engine doen't die, you hear the rpm are lowered and the sound is a little diffent, when I put the cable back all seems perfect, exactly the same happens with the other cable. I will check it at night today for leaks..

I sent you pictures in idle, mid stick, full trottle ( I had put a name in every picture )

Thanks again

Ok I see 2 possible problems with your linkage.

1. When in neutral the 2 Cam followers should line up with the arrows on the 2 cams.

2. When in wide open throttle the butterflies in side the carb should be parallel with the carb. Make sure that they are parallel becuase if they are over opening then they will rob you of power at wide open throttle.

Easy way to tell if they are opening to far is look at the roller pin. It should be vertical at wide open throttle.

Re: Jonhson 40hp vro fuel problem? please help

Hi again

As for the second mention, you have done yes the butterflies in side the carbs are exact parallel to the ground, I don't know what pin you mean, but I have checked them before I close the black plastic plate in front of them, in full throttle they are both wide open and parellel to the ground.

As for number one, I dont' know what is the Cam followers, and where the arrows are, is it easy for you to correct this in the photos I had sent you? and how I regulate this?

In idle the rmps in the instrument is about 1500 -1800 ( It shows )

As for the night, there are not electrical leaks around the coil.

I sent you the photo of the pin I think this is the one you mean, this photo is at full throttle is this correct?

I had sent you 2 more photos, one from the manual in idle position, and one from my idle position, they vary concerning the avance positions, that is what you talk about? I have to tell you that I had never adjusted all these, from the photos you can see the protected colour that was put from the factory is untouched.
I hear the motor very good out of the water, do you want to adjust these?

Green is your Cams
Yellow is Link and sync Arrows
Red is your Cam Follower

You have to do a link and sync from your manual.
The cam follower (Red) must line up with the link and sync arrows (Yellow)

According to the picture your butterflies are fine.

Your Rpms are way to high out of the water. they should be about a 1000 rpm out of water and 700-800 in the water. Note the Rpms with be lower once boat is place in water due to back pressure on the exhuast.

Hi my friend
I tried to catch you up before you post, but you had aleady posted
The above picture is from my manual, mine is not correct as you had aleady mentioned in your previous post.
I have corrected as in manual's picture.

At idle the follower roller adjusted with the allignment marks of the trottle lever.
the carbs ok, and in full trottle the roler pin of the carbs is vertical

Looking the manual mine has 12 amp alternator, that means the rod adjustment from pin to pin must be 64 mm ( 6,4 cm) ? is that correct?
My engine is 1996.

Also you say correct rpm of idle must be 1000 out of the water?
I hope my rpm insrtument that came with the motor on the console has correct readings

Thanks for all again

Re: Jonhson 40hp vro fuel problem? please help

Hi again my friend
So, I put the marks as stated above as in manual, If I put the rod adjustment from pin to pin 64 mm as stated in manual, and all aligments are ok, and the follower roller adjusted with the allignment marks of the trottle lever, adjusting idle speed screw ( it is the only way to allign the marks, then the avance position in the flywhell is from position a (red in my photo ) to position b green mark.
In this position the engine is not hearing good and it dies in idle.

I don't know what is going on
In the positions that was my engine without adjusting anything the engine sounds perfect..
