i figured, a pic would say more than my words can...

stats: johnson 110HP 1986 just purchased this powerhead.

1. isn't there supposed to be a triangle shaped rectifier there?

2. the throttle has nothing to help it return to idle speed. is there a spring missing here? I disassembled, cleaned, greased and reassembled it but it just hangs out there at fast idle. (pic shows after i pushed it back to idle)

3. someone put an external temp sensor on the starboard powerhead. at least thats what i think it is. (just odd because the 'normal' temp sensor is there too) (sorrry chopped the image)

4. and uhh...anything else ya see...^^

as always...thanks bunches for your help.

Looks like the motor has a water cooled regulator/rectifier.

No spring needed. But your sync & link is out of sync.

I'd almost bet some rings are starting to stick, a good decarb job might be something to consider.

thanks for your input Dhadley...

a follow-up question: when you say rings might stick, are you referring to them not expanding out to the cylinder walls because of a carbon gunk build up in the ring grooves...and therefore compression would be dropping?

compression was 120, 115, 112, 110

a good decarb might be in order as you say...

Usually when we see the linkage out of adjustment like that it's because the idle has started to go away. In most cases the idle quality goes away because the rings are starting to stick in the grooves. In most cases the rings are starting to stick because the motor has been lugged.

A good decarb job will help free up the rings but changing the set up so the motor won't be lugging is up to you.
