Re: Jtrom's 1959 starcraft Jet resto.........

Well, I got the motor back from the shop (2 months later) I think I could have done it myself in that amount of time. I did restore the pressure tank (since I had plenty of time to kill) after trying to start the motor for an hour and a half I loaded the boat on the trailer and took it home. Eventually realized that when I had the guy at the shop pressure test my tank for me he attached the plug to the fuel hose backwards. After that it started fine. The first time out it ran ok but coughed every 3-4 min. I then did some more reading (the deffinition of experience is: "what you recieve just after you needed it") and I put ethanol free gas with sta-bil in the tank for a remarkable difference. So I still need to borrow a GPS to get exact speed but I had around 800lbs in the boat (3 kids, 2 adults, motor, gas, batt, gear) and it seemed to run very well in some pretty heavy chop and wind. Im guessing round 20-25mph. Guess its time to start my own resto thread.

Wow that's pretty quick with all that weight! Here is my progress...Got the Coat-it applied and water tested for the final time by filling up with the hose....no leaks!. Also test fitted the motor for proper height before I build the transom...looks pretty good height wise. Doesn't that 50 horse look HUGE on this boat?....yikes!

Some more progress!... Got the interior painted with one coat self etching primer, 2 coats Rustoleum Clean Metal Primer, and 3 coats Rustoleum Marine topside semi-gloss. All sprayed on with a gun and small air compressor. Also trying to get a coat or two of primer on the trailer before the snow flies!

Yeah, but still less expensive than the High Dollar Paint, and, IMHO it will last just about as long and perform just about the same. Glad it worked out for you. She looks Great!!!

Thanks Wood. There was some "curtaining" of the paint but I blame that on putting on too thick of coats and cold weather. Still not bad for my first ever paint job.

Trailer work is such a grunt, eh.

Keep on it, it'll get a whole lot colder around here before it get warmer!

I just bought a 1959 Starcraft aluminum boat. Haven't been able to find much of anything on it until now. Thanks for the awesome pictures. Im a new fisher'woman' and an even knewer boat owner. lol. Looking forward to seeing the final work. As for now, Im looking forward to testing this little boat out on the water to do some fishing. I was just curious what this little boat was supposed to look like in its original form. It's older than me:)
