Depending on what motor you are trying to start, it could cause problems...
Especially on motors with switchboxes.... You connect live jumper cables to a battery that is hooked up to your motor and you could fry a switchbox real easy...

This is also the case, if you connect battery charger leads to the battery with the charger already turned on....
I've heard of it happening...

YOu must have a battery hooked up to the motor during starting, and after it is running.

Disconnecting the battery while the motor is running will fry the diodes in the rectifier/regulator.

We used to "car charge" a dead battery. That is your remove the battery from the boat and bring it over to a working car or truck. Start the car or truck and then use jumper cables to attach the boat battery to the car battery. Then wait about 15 minutes.

This will not totally charge a battery, but it usually will charge it enough to start your boat. Disconnect the battery from the car before you stop the car engine.

- Brian
