turning the ignition key doens't turn over the engine. a screw driver across the solenoid on the starter works fine. I just inherited this boat and know nothing about it. It's a 83 seaSquirt. Console works, lights, bait pump and bilge work fine. Turning the key clockwise to the far right doesn't turn over the engine.

Really appreciate any input here.

by the way, engine is 83 DT50 suzuki, connector to console appears to be 7 conductors with some spares unused.

could be something really dumb like a kill switch or lanyard if it has or had one.

Thank you,

thanks you very much.
what's a laynard?
mine doesn't turn over at all, like a kill switch issue. My console has a pull/push knob Haut-Up, a button Bas-Down, and the key Stop-off, Maron, Dem Start.

thanks again (o:

Laynard = Typo Lanyard
I doubt the kill switch is preventing it from turning over.
When you short across the solenoid are you shorting to the small post or across the two big ones?

If you short from the hot to the small post and nothing happens you have a bad solenoid. Otherwise sounds like wiring problem from key switch.

My console has a pull/push knob Haut-Up, a button Bas-Down, and the key Stop-off, Maron, Dem Start.
I did not understand this sentence :)

Re: jumping across solenoid works, key doesnt

There's two large posts on the base of the starter red and black large wires. The solenoid is piggybacked on the starter with 2 smaller posts, about half size. I bridge the 2 smaller posts on the solenoid and it turns the engine.

I had a key made for the ignition and it turns fine, but I'm not sure if the key needs to go deeper in the keyhole. It turns fine so I assume a short key would not be an issue.

Everything else on the console functions, pumps, lights work fine. Tried my car battery with no success. All fuses are fine.

My console has 2 buttons and 1 keyed ignition switch. The first push/pull is labelled "Haut-Up", the second push button is "Bas-Down", the keyed ignition is marked with three positions "Stop-off", Maron, Dem Start.

How would one troubleshoot the key switch. It appears the engine must use at least 2 conductors to activate the solenoid. I wonder if I could identify the wires at the rear of the ignition and touch them together, bypassing the keyed ignition switch.

Thank you very very much!!!

Buy a shop manual with a wiring diagram. Learn something about electricity. Take a course in logic. It probably is your neutral start switch. Take it to a pro..it's a cheap easy thing to diagnose and fix. ( DIYCMM...Doing It Yourself Costs More Money)

Hey, PLayer.

Go to the Engine FAQ and follow the "Outboard wont start" steps to troubleshoot.

Thanks guys!!
It's still not working and I'm trying to get it into an expert. Everyone I've called is booked through memorial weekend, thus I'm trying to fix it myself.

Fridays, neutral start switch? Is this the same as ignition switch. I'm thinking of replacing it.

Nuetral start switch. It is the switch that prevents your engine from turning over if is not in Nuetral. Mine is in the console. The up/down buttons are they for the trim?

Short key is not the issue.

Need a test light and friend to troubleshoot. The switch in the start position should light the light on the coil on the solenoid. If not then the problem is in the switch or no start in gear switch.
