Jumps out of gear...

i have a 1969 40hp johnson electromatic motor,just rewired all and restored the boat,new prop,and harness.when i have it out ,once in a wile only at full throttle,it seems to jump into nutrel or seem like it hits somrthing the motor jumps uplike it hit someting.but not.. and i have to stop and start of slow, ,to get it going again..any help please..8)

There are a few basic checks that should be done. Check the oil in the lower unit. No water allowed in there. Better yet, change the oil. Use ONLY "Premium Blend" oil from a Johnson/Evinrude dealer. Disconnect the wires at the powerhead, where they come up from the lower unit, and check the resistance of each one to ground. Should be 8 ohms on each. Reconnect the wires and check the voltage on each with ignition switch on and control in forward and reverse. Should read battery voltage on green in forward and blue in reverse. Shift the control a bunch of times to make sure. Bad or intermittant shift switches in the remote control are a common problem. If all this checks out, and you are certain the prop hub isn't slipping, a gearcase overhaul may be looming in your future.

many thanx for the tips .will look into them..thanx.
