Why don't more of you remove the bow railing on the smaller boats.16-18ft boats.
Like on the SS.

It seems like there would be no convenience and only inconvenience especially when docking, launching at ramp, beaching etc.

Right on Starman8, styling for sure. As far as functionality goes I don't know if it has any. It sure looks cool though.

Re: Just a question.

That's funny. I don't like the look at all.....

In fact, I'll have a set from a Sea Nymph that is very similar to a Starcraft....Free for the taking.

Also a walkthru windshield.

And no the point of this thread wasn't to sell things. For one, I'll give the stuff away. I was just curious.

It seems like if anything they would do nothing but be in the way.

Re: Just a question.

I guess some like them and some don't. I'll go so far as splitting mine and capping the ends in order to mount a trolling motor on the bow.

I hate my bow rails. Hoping to swap them out with some low-profile ones from Alpheus' bayliner.

Re: Just a question.

I think my boat looks naked w/ out the bow rails on her.:D

Plus I plan on getting a couple rail-mount rod holders to make them more functional. They are great for holding the boat at the dock, and tying the fish basket to also.

I like the taller rails on bigger boats even more. But they do get in the way of anchoring. The low-profile ones don't get in the way at all, and add some style.

Sturgis MI

Strait down I80/90 for the most part. Probably a couple hours from you, but might be worth it for a free windshield.

Re: Just a question.

Not everyone can go boating on smooth water, and sure as heck can't control the weather. Most of us feel sure footed on a boat, but has anyone EVER fallen out? Besides, it may be kids or such on or near the bow and a little stability goes a long way. I do prefer the low profile type though.

I like the low profile bow rails on my 16SS for a few reasons. They don't continue all around the bow so you can hop in from the beach. They are high enough for a comfey hand hold in rough water and the touch of chrome eye candy is nice.

Re: Just a question.

I like the bow rail on my Holiday. 90% of the time I use my boat fishing in Fairly rough seas and it is definatley a plus being able to stand on the bow safely while deploying the anchor. With out it I'd probably be on my knees grabbing onto anything I could just to stay on the boat.

I will admit it does get in the way a little when deploying and retreiving but the rail is high enough that the anchor can easily be passed underneath it. If it was purely a small lake boat I might consider removing the rail but since I use it mostly in saltwater I will definately be keeping it.

Plus, I kinda like the utilitarian look.

Re: Just a question.

I'll have more pictures tomorrow afternoon.

I need the rails and windshield gone asap, and will give them away. If someone feels they want to donate to the cause some boating items, that's fine, but like I said I will GIVE them away.
Just need them gone ASAP as I won't have room for them when they come off.

Re: Just a question.

Just so happens I am on vacation for the rest of the year, and I can get them off your hands ASAP. I sent you a PM with my contact info. When do you plan on having them off ?

I got them off the boat before I took it to the dump. I think they were the hardest things to take off that POS. Ill have them on the way to ya on Monday...

Re: Just a question.

i found the easiest way to remove the ones on my donorboat was to saw the hull open so i could access the hardware.....even this level of fiberglass work makes you appreciate aluminum!

i actually plan to mount one of the bow rails on the Starchief, laterally along front edge of cabin roof, so i can have a handhold or place to clip a safety line when going up on bow in bad seas......i just know that Murphy is going to punish me for buying the cruiser instead of an open boat by causing many fish to try to wrap me around the bow.....

Re: Just a question.

I know Murphy will punish me for buying an open bow by pouring water over the bow in bad seas. I can see it coming now. Hopefully my electrical is tucked up under the dash far enough. I'll have to get some water proof cold weather gear, November is b!#@*.

I guess there is no perfect boat, hence the need for multiple boats. (arghhh, no smilies???)
