As most of you know, I just got finished rebuilding a 50 foot triple toon house boat.

It is moored in a bay on the Okanagan lake in B.C. Canada.

During the past couple of good wind storms.....the quick link coupler we have been using to anchor the house boat has stretched and broken.....the boat has washed up on shore !
its a good thing that the bay is a silt bottom and a very few rocks in the bay. The toons are glass so a puncture would be catastrophic.

I have told the owner of the boat about redundancy in mooring, but so far he hasn't listened. You would think after breaking free twice that he would have paid more attention !

Then the other morning I woke up to this.....I just about freeked !

luckily it wasn't the one I worked on !

The bay is also known as "houseboat row".....most of the house boats that live on the water all year round are moored there.

When we washed up...we weren't the only one.....Two more broke loose as well......This is a pic of the boat that went over.

Apparently, when he washed up the first time....The boat hit some of the only rocks in the bay,,,,,,the toon was punctured, but the owner didn't know it.
the toon filled with water and over she went in the next storm.

Really sad.....most of the owners of the boat in the bay, know each other and watch each others boats. This guy was kinda a recluse and no one knew where to get hold of him.
That was a really nice boat. but i imagine its totally gone now....I cant see much of it being salvageable.

The moral of the story is.....

If you are moored.....check your boat all the time.....if you cant, make sure someone knows how to get hold of you !

What? What? What???

What kind of Canadian water isn't frozen solid at this time of year??? Are you sure you live in Canada eh?;)

Glad to hear all of your hard work wasn't torn up... but if it was, wouldn't that be job security?

lol.....the lake is part of a chain of lakes that feeds a dam that gives California its electric power....The lake water does not get hard because its always flowing.....years ago....before they cut a ditch and joined the lakes...the water froze big time.....so we can blame it on California.....lol

actually....there is another lake here that does not freeze....its a fairly big one for mountain lakes....about 30 miles long. I think that one is geo thermally heated because it is really warm in the summer.....bathtub warm ! (its super deep as well.....over 500 feet in areas)

Maybe they need to paint their registration numbers and contact information on the bottom of the hulls.

Well it's is good to hear your work didn't get wasted (yet). That feller needs to listen to you about mooring unless he just likes spending money:)
