Wow this boating stuff is giving me the biggest highs and lows I have had in a long time..if I wasn't bi-polar before I am sure I am now..lol

I just got back from a 4 hour boating trip...my very first one really other then a couple circles real quick Fog was in thick so couldn't leave the harbor but was still messing around out there all morning hoping / waiting for the fog to lift so i could do some fishing in our new boat (38 year old boat but new to us).

It ran great..started by just barely turning the key (brand new marine battery) and I shut it off at least a dozen times to float around...test my poles...test my kicker...check current etc. Everytime it would start instantly and made me feel very safe and proud that I got it fixed (haven't even had time to give props for the help yet).

Anyway got it home and needed to flush it..took some pics first so I could post a prop / balance question on here and then put the muffs on turned the key and it just cranks over but will not start. Checked the gas lines...bulb and choke all is working (didn't even need choke all day).

Now all of a sudden there is a bunch of gas oil mixture (I hope) coming out of the prop area which only happened when I tried to start it a few times.

HELP...lol
I am losing my mind I swear.

My other boat (first one) had a main coil wire to check spark but this seems to either not have one or I am blind.
It has three coils I think but not the main spark wire coming off the power pack. Do I check spark at each?

I also pulled the plugs out to see if they looked black or wet etc. they look clean but maybe dry?...i didn;t get anything on my fingers when I wiped each one...not sure how wet they should be.

Anyone have any ideas?...there were no incidents between boating and trailering home...it was out of the water for about an hour before trying to restart it to flush.

Please let it be something cheap.

p.s. If anyone read my other thread about it running poorly and watched the video...kevin helped me determine it was the spark advance not moving...once I unstuck that it ran fine.

Re: Just back from first run - '78 70hp ran good but now won't start and oil from pr

Just got done checking compression and just over 100 on all three...also checked for spark on one plug wire and it was getting it.

I mixed new gas carefully at 50:1 ratio...the oil was in a sealed can but a couple years old (at least).

Also this is the first time boat was run like this in about two years..it went out for 2 minutes a few days ago but spark advance wasn't moving so didn't run right.

Anyone have suggestions on what to check etc.?

After much more reading it appears this is something in the fuel delivery...maybe too much oil, pump problems or float issues.
I have never worked with carbs before and have only changed a fuel pump and intake system (spider) on my Chevy.

I did get it to start for a few seconds though so I have hope again...man I tell you I will NEVER buy anything without checking the compression first hand...that's what I thought it was going to be since that was the main thing the PO sold me on...lol

Hoping this carb / fuel will be something with little knowledge and experience can handle.

Have a thread on the carb issue started:

After draining float bowls..installing new plugs and using the old gas it seems to start fine now.
Didn't isolate the problem but at least now I can keep an eye out and not freak out if it happens again.

Having a compression check done really settled my nerves...since this had sat for a couple years i thought it fried after the first run from rusty cylinders or something.

It's possible that the oil coming out at the prop is unspent fuel that built up inside the leg....and is now working it's way out of the motor now that the motor is running.

I sure hope so...after I ran it for awhile last night I went in for an hour or so came back out and there was quite a large puddle of grayish brown sludge under the motor. I had it running on muffs so am "hoping" it's gas / oil that was sitting in leg and now mixed with water and coming out prop.

I am leaving now and won't be back until this evening but will check lower unit when I get back...with my fingers crossed...lol
