Hello all, first let me start by saying that this is an amazing forum, I have found a TON of useful information on here and hope that I can contribute some myself. (I've been in auto restoration for over 25 years so lets just say I am mechanically inclined). This post will probably be a little long winded, but I am new here so no one has any background information on me to know what I am talking about, so I will apologize for that now.

Now to my question. I want to modernize the fresh water pump system. I just bought this boat, and it has been sitting for over 10 years. As I was going through it (I started with rubber parts first) I took the water pump out to change the impeller. However, I noticed that the impeller and shaft were removed by the previous owner at some point, my guess is that they were going to replace it. So, all I have is an empty case with no shaft or anything (thankfully I didn't hook up water to it before I started going through it).

I have looked all over the internet, and asked all the boat shops around here, and the only way to replace it is with a complete kit running around $300. Before I shell out the money and go with the stock setup, I was wondering if anyone on here is modified the pump system and put on something more modern and cost effective. Maybe a pulley setup or electric pump? (not really thrilled about the electric pump idea, seems like mechanical would be more reliable).

I also don't like the idea of having high pressure water separated from my oil by no more than a little gasket. I was thinking about making a simple block off plate like you would do when swapping out a fuel pump to go electric, to seal up the cover, then using a newer pulley style pump instead. I can fabricate just about anything, so if anyone has done this before, please chime in. Also, if this can be done, does anyone have any suggestions about which pump I should use that is easy to get parts for and pretty common at the boat shops?

Thanks for all your help in advance.

Now to my question.

Ayuh,.... Welcome Aboard Jeff,.... What motor, 'n drive are We talkin' 'bout, Anyways,..??

There's not much in the way of New technology for raw water pumps, 'n as for Hi-pressure, it might run 15psi or so...

Thanks for the response, after all my babbling it seems that i forgot to mention the most important part. The boat has a Volvo Penta AQ130C with a 270 drive.

Hi.
I'd guess the parts were removed to winterize.
I take my brass indoors in winter, the tubing, brass pump housing and internals.

A repair kit is available for less than $100 which contains two bushings, the shaft, and the shaft seal.
Bushings come out pretty easy for a mechanicalliy inclined fella!
The brand of impeller has lots of discussion on the net, and should run less than $60.
I plan on running a little experiment and updating my previous post with actual vacuum readings on different brand impellers.
My aftermarket replacement is lousy, so I am going to put a genuine Volvo impeller in before my next trip out.

If you have the two copper tubes, then I'd try first going all original.
The oil is further away than you'd think on the AQ motor, there is a external drive gear behind that raw water pump mounting plate, the engine and it's oil are behind the drive gear!

As for electric pump, you'll get differing opinions here.

oops
You have a 130 I have a 131, forget my discussion regarding the external gear and oil.

812994 shaft about $60 from I boats. If the shaft seal were to leak it would come out of the weep hole, I replace those seals every other year anyway.
I would think any pulley driven pump would run at least $300.

I remove my impeller every year also, have you searched the boat, I stick mine in the breather hose.

Well, just had my local marine shop pull one out of the hat for me, they had a new shaft sitting in the shop and was able to order a impeller for me and some new seals. I still don't like the design of the water pump, just seems too close to engine oil for my taste, but i guess it has worked this long so...

Thanks for all the replies, this boat is going to be an interesting restoration project, but after it is done at least I can run around the lake feeling like James Bond, he he. (I promise not to jump anything) If I can I will post some pictures of the boat, before during and after if anyone is interested.

Here is a picture from the add on Craigslist, it is now stripped of all interior and cleaned up. I will post more if anyone is interested in the progression of this boat.

I think the previous owner (not the guy I bought it from but the the one before him) probably did just that, only forgot to send them with the boat when he sold it, along with the keys and other doodads.

Very cool boat. I suggest you start a restoration thread in the resto forum. There is a lot of help over there.

Lots of help from the aq130 guys on this forum as well.

Welcome.
