Re: Just bought a '62 Evinrude Sportwin 10 HP

I am back from up north, and had a great time!
Lots of fish, Walleye mostly, but a few jacks showed up.

Motor was running great, until the throttle linkage screws fell off.........couldn't believe it, I must not have tightened them all the way....which I still cant believe..I was so upset about that but I wasn't going to let it screw the whole trip up...So i ended up rigging it up so it was in full throttle all the time. That worked great, until I ran the prop into a rock on the last day...but even all of that didn't ruin the trip, we had another 9.5 HP motor on another boat, so we were towing by the end of it.

To get to these falls, we had to portage our boat and motors over, it is very beautiful, very untouched.

We had quite an eventful trip, even though everything that could of went wrong did go wrong, we ate very well, and everyone took their limits out. Going back next year!!

Here are some pictures.

Just caught this thread, looks like a great trip. That's a nice mess of fish. I have a '61 Sportwin that runs like a bear, I just have to get motivated to get out on a trip like yours.

I think you should toss that motor out alongside the road someplace. In front of my house would be the ideal place to toss it. The 1962-63 10hp is one of my favorite portable fishing motors. I need one.
.

Jeez F_R if you lived up the street I would give you mine, I don't need it "that bad" lol. Found out tonight that my lower has a pin hole in it.

Hey... I live just up the street! :) The 417 street!

They're one of my favorite engines also. And for another 10 lbs or so you can get 8 more hp! Another favorite of mine!

I also have a good lower end housing. The darn thing jumps out of gear, but the housing is still good.

That is really a fine old motor. My grandfather had one from new. I ran it when I was a kid and learned how to change water pumps and everything on it.
If it is jumping out of gear, it needs a new clutch dog if you can find it. I ran that motor well into the 1980's. Wish I had it now.

Well, it turns out that my lower unit housing is spoken for, but I have other stuff for your old motor if you need it. I'm going to tear the whole thing down and part it out on Ebay.

I just saw this thread for the first time. It's one of my favorites, now! It's neat to see the pics of how the motor was used, and if I were you, I'd treasure that pic of all of you guys holding the fish! IT's really nice.
Few people post "finished" pics or even the outcome of the repair.
Enjoyed your pics!!!!!!

BTW, I can't believe F-R wants one of these---I figured he would have quite a stash from over the years! I want one, too......:)

Re: Just bought a '62 Evinrude Sportwin 10 HP

i found this thread and want to fix mine! my grandfather gave me one and he said it use to run. i really do not have a bunch of cash to throw into it, but i want to try to get it running. it was sitting up for a while, then i tried to crank it up. cranked up and then we killed it. put it on a boat and tried, got nothing. bought some new sparks for it and tried again. again, nothing. the sparks were dry. that was about a year ago and now i am determined to get this motor running. what should be the first thing i should do this time before trying to crank it up? and another thing, what position should all the knobs be in upon starting? thanks!

00ragincajun00, please start a new thread with your engine model # and whats wrong with it. Also start by reading the top secret thread at the top, especially under 'awakening a sleeping outboard'.

This is one of the most interesting threads I've seen in a while, thats a mighty fine mess of fish you folks caught. I fixed up an old 5.5 a couple years ago ,and still running perfct. I don't think you could buy anew small motor that will idle down as good as these old Evinrude's.
