Re: Just bought a '74 Glastron-Carlson CV16 Super

are you over on CGOA Frank? I have to tell you, I've had good experiences there and I've had some that just want to tell me that I'm "cutting corners" and that I'm unsafe! I have pictures from inside the boat, my question is why do you need them? I can't even go to CGOA without reading half a dozen private messages from a couple of guys because I didn't remove the entire transom and build completely new solid one, because I didn't remove the floatation foam from both sides to do so, and I even have one gentlemen telling how bad of a person I am because I didn't return this Stern Drive boat back to a Stern Drive and instead redid it as an outboard boat.......

Sorry if I seem jumpy, I just need a place that is going to allow me to post pictures and a little info that I can refer back to when I want to.

Yes I am on cgoa also ClassyGlassy.
And yea some go way far on the "original" Glastron thing.
It is easy to tell some one not to ruin a beautiful design and to bring it back to the way it originally was... but now for real... and the vallue, it is just a boat, not a `70 matching # Hemi `cuda. ;)
I just like pictures as you only described the way you did the transom on the inside and now to actual see your job and I like (to work on) boats.
I think that some just try to warn you in some way and are a little sceptical by seeing the pictures of the original i/o cut out filled with some wood and putty for your heavy tower of power to hang on.
It is your boat and you can do to it what ever rocks your world, just be safe.
Ive had a , 73 cv16ss with the volvo130/270 so.....
now show me the d@&%n pictures but you dont have to :D

Re: Just bought a '74 Glastron-Carlson CV16 Super

Thanks for clarifying Frank,

I'll get you pictures as soon as I clean up the stern from removing half of the flotation foam back there. I added 2x12 pressure treated wood the width of the transom bolted at the 4 corners through the transom with 1/2" carriage bolts then made 2x12 triangle braces from the transom board to the floor which also has a piece of 2x12 the width of the transom added to the keel board under the floor.

So in all, I've braced my transom fix with extra 2x12 through the floor and into a 2x12 in the keel. I cut 1.75 inches off the keel at the bilge for 11.5 inches or so. This allowed me to lay the 2x12x20 down into the groove I created and was screwed down using deck screws and 6 minute epoxy across the keel. The new 3/4" Plywood was put down over the 2x12 and screwed into place along the keel. The triangle 2x12 wedges were screwed into and through the floor plywood and into the 2x12 below to brace it properly with countersunk deck screws again, then screwed to the inside Transom board that was bolted through the transom.

There is TWICE the material used from the original transom and then some for more stability and bracing to ensure this 155hp motor doesn't come inside!

Pictures will show this to clear up any questions. I should have the pictures done and uploaded by Saturday afternoon.

First 2 were what it looked like when I got it, 3rd one is the new transom tied into the floor with 2x12s braced from the transom to a 2x12 below the deck lying sideways and mounted into the keel/stringers..........

I'll have more pictures of this when the fiberglass and bondo are done.....my first shot at fiberglass mat and resin is kicking my arse!

Had to put up my 10x20 Canvas Tent as a makeshift cover for gluing in the carpet. Weather was in the 40s and rainy all day........what a wonderful June day!!!

Finishing carpet tomorrow and then come the seats.
