I just bought my first boat! A 2006 Pro Team 175 tx, with a brand new 2008 Mercury 50 hp ELPTO. I remember the guy I bought it from showing me how to "cold" start the thing, but I cant remember the process. Will somebody please enlighten me?

First things first, if it is indeed a brand new engine, make sure you use a 50:1 ratio of TCW-3 to gas in the initial tank of fuel along with filling the reservoir on the engine itself. It's going to smoke like a SOB at the dock and **** off anyone nearby but it's necessary to lubricate everything properly. After that you no longer have to put any oil in the gas tank, just pump it full of 87 octane and keep the reservoir on the engine full.

Ok, on to the actual starting process:

1. Squeeze the primer bulb until it's firm (pretty much until you can't squeeze it anymore)

2. Make sure the kill switch is set to run

3. Go ahead and try to start the engine (it'll likely fail but I was always told to try to start it without choking it first, sometimes it does fire right up if it's warm out)

4. If it doesn't start, turn the key to run and push it in and hold it for a few seconds (chokes the engine)

5. Try to start again, if it doesn't start up go ahead and repeat step 4 but don't hold it too long or you will flood the engine

6. If it still doesn't fire, you can push in the center release button and then shift the lever into forward. This will allow you to feed the engine throttle without shifting the drive out of neutral. I've never had to do this on mine but it may be necessary in some cases, just don't go crazy and feed it to much gas.

That should work for you...let me know if you have any questions.

I would be cautious about running a mix in a 4 stroke engine. Oil on engine parts where it does not belong cannot be a good thing. Download an owners manual and see if it tells you to do that. Mine certainly didn't on the boat/motor I bought last year.

Now, you do need to follow a break in period and 1hr on the motor is not enough.

Just my opinion...any input from others out there??

He has a two stroke engine thus the need for oil, that's what the "O" stands for on his model number (oil injected). Just wanted to clear that up so there was no confusion and I am not trying to be rude, so don't take it that way bud.
