Well I finally did it. I got my first boat. Its a 16.5' Larson flyer w/ a 70hp Johnson outboard. I paid $3350 for it. I will be taking it out this weekend. Any comments would be appreciatd as far as : is it a reliable boat and motor, did I get it a good price, should i have any problems with pulling a hydroslide or tube, is it a good first boat to have?

Thanks!
Well...it sure is a sharp looking outfit, from the pictures it looks in great shape, couldn't quite make out the year in the HIN on the 2nd pic. Price is relative, if your happy and get many hours of trouble free boating then it was a steal! Welcome to the world of boating and may you have deep pockets :D :D :D

Jixxxer:
Reel nice looking boat. Have fun, and be safe.
Only thing to add is if it didn’t come with a spin on type fuel filter i.e. water/fuel separator I would add one.

If that 70Hp is enough to push that rig, it'll be a good motor for you. Its a pretty reliable motor in my opinion.. I have a friend who has a 76 model and a neighbor that has an early 90's model and both of them have been very reliable and trouble free with just routine maint.. I would not hesitate to buy one myself.

Did you do a water test before you bought it?? Did it plane quickly?? My friend has this on an early 70's larson closed bow 16' fiberglass. WE pull kids around on tubes all day. While pulling tubes he gets about 22-24 MPH WOT. Not a wild ride but good enough for young kids..

I happen to have Glastron's version of that boat.

It is a VERY fun boat. I went for the max hp I could, cause I wanted to be able to pull Anyone that came along. It handles like a dream. If you want it to plane faster, do what I did originally. I put a 30-40# rock under the front seat (In the open bow), really made a difference.

Now for the negitive.

From day one, and only in reverse. while backing up, if the boat starts to turn in EITHER it's over. you can't recover from that turn untill you go forward again. the boat will just sit there and do doghnuts all day, pivoting around the motor. If you turn the motor the other way, then you will go down the water sideways. First time out, point the boat away from the ramp and go out in the open water and try it in reverse.

I finally fixed mine by adding "Smart Tabs". Now I can actually steer in reverse, and it planes out a lot faster without the rock on the bow. I'll take a couple of pictures of the smart tabs installed and post them tonight.

Enjoy yourself on this boat, they are really a nice riding boat, it takes chop very nicely also.

Craig

Good luck!!! Looks like a nice boat. You may have to get an extra prop for when you are pulling a tuber or skiier.

So what type of prop would be sufficient for this? Its an after maket prop on there now, but i dont know what pitch it is?

Nice looking boat! I bet it's rated for 120 hp, but you should be able to have plenty of fun with the 70 provided you're propped right. From what I can see in the pictures it looks like a great deal, enjoy!

The pitch of a prop is usually stamped on the hub between the blades - something like 131/4X17 - which translates to 13 1/4' diameter by 17" pitch. You need a prop (and set-up) that allows the max recommended rpms at wide open throttle. I don't know your motor but I would guess the recommended max rpms are 5,500.

Nice rig and the seller must have been really hurting to let it go at that price. A "deal!"

Very nice boat. My brother in law has the almost identical boat with a 70hp Force and he can pull me up on skis. I weigh in at about 220lbs and he has 2 adults and 2 kids in the boat with him..
