Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

I wouldn't get too discouraged until you can evaluate the engine and see what the problems are. The water could be anything from rain filling up the carb and migrating down from there to blown gaskets and manifolds. I wouldn't dump a whole bunch of cash into it until you know it's mechanically sound though.

I have a perfect complete mercruiser 302 that I can't even seem to get $500 bucks for. I have had it on craigslist for well over a month.

So that one is yours eh...:D

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

I can attest to that. I see the boats you folks mention that are worth $4k down there and they'd fetch $6,500 to $7,500 up here.

Most of its because of excise taxes and duties importing it. Give you a comparison. My best friend bought a new Acura Sedan. $26K USD all in. Same car here in Canada was $42K CDN + tax or approx $48K total

Big difference. Same with boats, trailers, etc.

Someone just ask me what a good price for a particular boat was in the States. Not being there at the moment, I checked NADA. They had a high price of $7030, as fitted. The boat was advertised here for 19,500 Euro ($26,503.88), it sold for 15,500 Euro ($21,000). They thought they got a great buy!

It had been imported from the States, and with the exchange rates being what they are, I doubt the guy paid more than $7,000, plus import fees.

I tried to point out that this was over the “new price” for a boat, that was in nice shape, but it was over 15 years old.

The buyer has never had a boat before, but even then, he should have done a little research.

It is now his, and the list of hidden repairs is starting to add up, and to add up at German hourly wages. He has two left hands, and can't do even a light bulb change hisself.

The Germans often think that the more they pay, the cooler they are. They like the idea that they can buy status, and the more it cost, the more status they have. When they find out they got ripped off, they don't get mad at themselves, or the seller, they get mad at those that know they got ripped off. I think he just wanted to show off when he asked what it was worth.

He is now mad at me, for telling him his new/used boat, is not worth what he wants everyone to think it is.

I didn't know he had already bought it.

I am not saying you got ripped off, and I love the boat you bought.

If the price was right I would have also considered it as a long term project. I would also plan on keeping it for many years after the restoration though. If you are looking at it as a future classic that will stay in the family for years, go for it.

If you just want a few years of use out of it, or plan to sell it for a profit latter, forget it.

Okay

Okay

alright so i hooked a battery up to it today and the starter turns the engine. doesnt start tho, so i started working on that. no spark coming out of the coil but i had power going into it. so i replaced the coil. then still nothing no spark, replaced all the stuff inside the distributer no spark still. the wire that runs from the distributer to the ground on the coil is in bad shape but wouldent i have spark coming out the top of the coil still. also i changed the oil three times today and it runs out clear now so thats better than milky right. the oil pressure also go's up witch is good? why no spark tho should i trace all those wires.

Pictures: my cameras batterys were dead ill promise i will take a buch tommorow cause i think u guys need to see this thing.

thanks

Milky oil?

Not sure what it means here, but in a car it usually means a cracked head, blown head gasket, or a cracked block...

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

on i boats....we have some of the best mechs around....i can think of 10 regular posters off the top of my head that i would take my boat to if they were around here.......

post the no spark in the i/o section......be very specific on what kind of motor it is and what you have done.......

then do exactally what they tell you in the order they tell you....and post back with your results......you be their eyes ears and hands......let them be the brains.....

if that motor has life in it....they will have it running....

i really hope you can get this baby running....the boat ...as you can see from the posts here...is a true classic that drives like a caddilac.....a lot of us here would jump at the chance of restoring it ......that 40 year old boat is still better than some boats 30 years newer

12v to pos side of coil Undo neg side do you see voltage? if yes open dist cap check point gap should be .015 may not be right but we are looking for spark .Make sure points open and close when you turn the engine over.Re hook neg side of coil turn till points open do you have voltage where wire goes to points?Do you have ground at dist plate? Glad to see you working on it?

Giving up on this engine? Still stuck on the ignition problem?

Try this to narrow down your ignition problem. Remove the dist cap, then make sure the points are closed, touching. Pull the coil wire off the cap and hold it close (1/4" or less) to bare metal on the engine (watch out while holding the coil wire, if you are a better path to ground then the coil wire, you will be the path the ground,,, a shocking experience :D). With the key on, open the points manually with a small screw driver, kind of tap or bounce the points as if the distributors was turning.

Did the coil produce a spark(s)?
