Theres nothing wrong with not wanting to spend 3 months ripping out rotted wood and getting glass dust all over you.

Theres nothing wrong with enjoying doing it either,
thats why they have menus in restaurants.

Yup,

Exactly what jonesg said... The only thing wrong would be if you felt down deep, that you were getting into a project that was over your head. So long as this fourum stands, you ain't over your head.

As for money??? I did a quick search on the Web, and found the following...

http://www.ablboats.com/details.asp?ListingID=72906

How are its stringers, foam, deck, and stern? And even if you do buy a Maxium, what condition will it be in 5 years?

Do what you want. Order off the menu or home cook. No skin off my elbows... I just hope that you think it through and understand that if you want to go thru with a rehab, you've got good people here. Lawd knows that they've helped me!

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

I understand where you are coming from. My old 73 SeaSwirl needed the type of work you are describing (deck, stringers, transom) and I decided it wasn't worth the $$$ and effort on that old tri-hull... 2 months of work and $1000+ in materials and I would still have a $500 boat

I picked up a thrashed 2001 boat that needed about the same amount of $$$ and effort to get it back together, and will come out with a better boat when finished, or so I hope...

I guess I'm one of those people who never view a boat as an investment.I got a rotted to **** boat for free and will porlly dump thousands into it..and will prolly never make any of my money back......But its a very unique design and will suit my needs....Do peopel actually buy boats in hopes of one day selling them and getting their money back? Not being sarcastic just curious.

my grandfather had 8 boats and dumped tens of thousands into them and always upgraded over the years...but honestly i dont think he ever thought about (will this add resale value if i add this or fix this)...it was always just the "love" of boating and building things that kept him going.

I miss him and all the boating adventures I had as a kid =\

Hi all,

There is one part of the equation that's hard to measure... Let's say that you keep the boat and rehab it. What's the intrinsic worth of the boat when you're done? Not the resale value, but the value to you.

Look at it this way... Let's say that a person puts a Winter and $5k into a boat in a total rebuild. When he's done, he might have a boat worth $3k. That's a $2k loss right? Nope, not if he likes the boat. Here are some "immeasurables":

* You literally know every inch of the boat - nothing can go wrong that you can't fix. (This is one reason that I like building boats from scratch - even if one of my boats gets run over by a steam roller, I can build another.) I doubt that there are many new BW owners who can make that statement.

* You probably restored it to better-than-new functionality. So you end up with a boat who's new-boat replacement cost would be crazy.

* You've learned an incredible amount in the process. As my folks used to say, "Get as much between your ears as you can, because once you've got it there, no one can take it away from you."

* Let's say that you've got a $5k boat you're happy with... You take care of it and it lasts 20 years. That's a boat cost of $250/year (about $21/month). That's a whole lot of cheap boating in a design you like and can modify as you want.

As has been said before... It all depends on what you want...

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

exactly my thoughts.

my boat has a bunch of designs that I don't like (over sized splashwell that takes up space im going to cut down, gunwales that flex too much and foam under the deck that i know were for strength and not flotations).so now that I have everything torn apart I can make a much stronger custom boat that I started out with!

I would follow my gut instinct, it tells me to cut this one loose.
If it was an outboard I would feel differently, but the bad inboard puts the project into a different category of work and expense, not something I'd want in a first boat.

I saw it on Craigslist. It is one of the better project boats I've seen in a while, on the local listings anyway.

Did I miss what the results of transum core sample? Are all the stringers rotten?

Did you ever have it in the water for final testing of your drive system?

For $750, that boat should sell quick.

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses

vr6....stoutcat gave you an exellent post on the monitary break downs with a boat.....

but if you are looking at a boat as an imvestment........one that will grow in value over the years.......it wont.....it cant.....dont even go there.

td figures he gets about 10 cents an hour restoring boats....

the only way possible is if you get the perfect candidate boat....and i havent seen any rivas in greate condition for free lately.

(dont jump on me for this one guys...some people can do it...but only if they really know what they are doing)

boats are a trade off.......you get em cheap and fix em..............or spend the money and buy em new......in all likely hood......both will be sold at a loss of some type

Rebuilding a boat is not for everyone. I'd love to tell you to continue on, however you are making the descion based on your life circumstances, not mine.

I have no doubt you have the skills to rebuild the boat. YOU did get the engine and mechanicals working. That is a major acomplishment by itself, and if you are serious about stopping here. At least with the engine running you should be able to get more out of it than what you paid.

On a personal note. Staring at the massive amount of work involved in a project can deter you from tackling the project. However if you break it up into smaller chunks the project becomes more managable and not as duanting. Give it a week and see where you stand.

Re: Just bought wondering if i should cut my looses
