I had a post on removing the outdrive on a 95 Four Winns 4.3L OMC Cobra to lube the gimble bearing & u-joints and thankful for all the helpful info. I just finished the job but I still have a few questions. First when I removed the outdrive thire was no gasket around it, just a small rubber ring around the water intake for the engine. At my local boat shop they sold me a gasket for it but it was very very close to a perfect fit except by the shift linkage. It also covered the rubber ring and didn't look like it was going to make a good seal thire. Although no gasket was used thire was no evendence of leakage into the outdrive. I recall last year a different guy at the shop said it didn't use a gasket for that outdrive. Do I or don't I need a gasket? I put it back together without one but before I put it in the water I'd like to know for sure. I also toqured the bolts on the outdrive to 60#. I know I've asked this question before but does anyone know for sure what they get torqued to? I plan on getting a manual for the boat but the shop was sold out and will not get any in for a few weeks. Thanks once again for your help.<br /><br />P.S. It was not real hard to do like some of you had told me. So if anyone is thinking of doing this and has never done it before it was not bad to do. Use the engine lift to hold the outdrive because I think I would be 10X harder without using it.

u need a gasket. you'll have water in there if u don't use one. use gasket sealer on it to help seal it off. i never torqued mine. just get em good & tight you'll be fine.

Sloppy do you have the wording s/x or j/v on the cover? did you have to unhook a shift cable under the ski slope cover to pull the drive? if so you have a 96 joint venture drive in a 95 boat this is a good thing f-winns was always first to get new product in there boats this is when volvo bought up the drive business from omc. and no it does not have a gasket just o-rings...AD

Yes I did have to unhook the shift linkage to remove the outdrive. I don't know if it has j/v or s/x I'll have to look.

I guess i have a bad habbit I have done it so long I just crank them with a 3/8 rachet & 5/8 wobble and let them fly. the good book says 25 ft lbs in a criss cross pattern the first round starting withe the center two. then a final of 50 ft lbs in a criss cross pattern again. the o- rings if glued on(pivot housing only) and in good shape(not flattened out) I personaly leave them any nicks they get new. the drive shaft gets new ones do not put grease on these, gear lube only. make sure to lube splines with spline lube not bearing grease. the best is OMC moly lube..Siera makes some that is not bad. have fun A.D.

Thank you once again a.d.mobile. I put 60# with the criss cross pattern. Started with 20# then went up 10# each time. I only saw the O ring around the water intake, didn't see the one for around the drive shaft. Was the drive shaft gasket around the rubber boot for the drive shaft? I can't tell if it is a j/v or s/x because I belive the tag fell off if the tag was on the plastic cover that's on top of the outdrive. The Four Winns manual does say it a clone clutch though.

If you had remove the rear cover to unhook the shift cable to pull the drive it is a cone clutch this system has no esa module just one cable from control box to drive the o-rings i talking about are on the drive shaft of the drive.. A.D.

a.d. I did see the O rings on the drive shaft, there were two of them. Do you always replace the ones on the shaft when you pull the outdrive? I didn't replace any of the O rings, they didn't look bad or beat up. I also use a marine bearing grease on the splines, shaft and over the two rubber O rings on the shaft. Should I re-pull the outdrive or will I get by till the end of the year when I plan to pull it again. Thanks once again everyone for your help.

sorry the sun came out here in mi and everyone now is ready for summer. you will be fine the only thing the grease will do (sometimes) is make it hard to install drive, it will air lock with the grease on the o-rings. next year just put gear lube on them and get some molly lube or sierra spline grease for splines on drive shaft. I like to do all service in the fall drive pull, oil ch, gear lube that way in the spring you just check oil levels and go. if the boat does not sit in the water all year and usage is under 75 to a 100 hrs do drive pull every other year if you want. always do engine oil and gear lube yearly. have fun A.D.
