Hello All,

I just finished building my 18 ft center console. It was great watching it go from a pile of plywood, fiberglass and jugs of epoxy to a finished boat. I took it out and tested it on Wednesday and it performed great!

Here is what it used to look like:

Great looking boat!

Was that a "stitch and glue" boat or conventional building?

How many hours do you estimate that it took you, or better yet how many weekends?

Re: Just Finished My Boat....Baffin Bay, Look Out!!!

Newhook,

Thanks for the kind words.

It was stitch and glue. The boat took me 10 weeks to build from start to finish. I am on summer break from college, so I had the time to devote to it. I estimate that it took roughly 100 or so hours, not including the time it took waiting for epoxy to cure before moving on to the next step.

I got the plans from www.bateau.com , they have a lot of different models available along with excellent customer support. I would highly recommend them if you are considering building a boat.

The boat performs well on the water. According to my GPS, it runs 24 mph with my little 30 hp Suzuki motor. Not bad for a large 18 foot boat.

cvlngineer

Your boat looks great! Looks like alot of fun. If you don't mind me asking, can i get an approx cost of building the boat? (minus the motor)

Good work!

WOW.. Excelent Job.. 10 weeks WOW.. Is it more fun to build it, or use it??? I've been working on the refit of my 21 open fisheman for almost a year now and it's nowhere near finished.. Think I'll start from scratch on the next project.. Looks like TOO MUCH FUN... Enjoy...
P.S. if you need a new project to work on you can always come work on mine... :D

Re: Just Finished My Boat....Baffin Bay, Look Out!!!

Sorry for the delay folks, school has kept me busy this past semester!

Thanks for the compliments.

djohns19,

I made the console. It was pretty easy to do. I am considering building a larger one for it.

AccousticTX,

The approximate cost of the boat was around $1600.

Snapperbait,

It is DEFINITELY more fun to use it! I don't think I will be getting the "itch" for quite awhile. (c;

cvlngineer

awesome boat!

I admire your work, looks great! If I could add another question, what type of tools did it require? Were all of the materials available at a local store, or did you have to order some?

What was the most costly part, the plans?

Thanks!
Shawn

cvlngineer,

If you dont mind me asking...how shallow have you been in your boat? I am now looking into building one, and I like your boat, and the phantom 18...

I think I am going to go with the dory though because this will be my first, and it seems so much more simple. However, I want to be able to get into the flats (Texas Coast, Rockport/Corpus Christi area), which means 2ft of water, sometimes less.

Would the OD18 work?

Thanks!
Shawn

Re: Just Finished My Boat....Baffin Bay, Look Out!!!

ShawnQ,

Thanks! I believe I have exchanged e-mails with you, but just in case: I got most of my building materials from Sutherlands, except the fiberglass and epoxy, which I ordered from www.bateau.com. It comes in a kit that is specific to the boat you are building, and includes all glass and epoxy. I did have to get more epoxy, since it was my first time working with the stuff. The epoxy and glass were the most expensive part. The whole project (minus the motor) ended up costing somewhere in the neighborhood of $1500 - $2000, but I incurred some one-time expenses for tools, like saws and sanders.

I have had the boat in about 16 inches of water (drifting). The boat will float in about 8 inches of water, but your motor will drag. Tilt your motor up and you can drift across the flats and stand up on the casting deck with a great view. From this high vantage point, you can see fish clearly and throw lures at them.

I really like the boat and highly recommend it. There is a new design now, called the Phantom 22. It is a beautiful boat, and I may build it at a later date, when I have room to store it.

cvlngineer

Re: Just Finished My Boat....Baffin Bay, Look Out!!!

Thanks!!

I won't be on the water for a couple of weeks )c:

I had to pull the powerhead and am in the process of replacing the wristpin bearings in my motor. I have never torn into one of these things before, but, then, I had never built a boat before either. I will get it done, at least I keep telling myself I will!

cvlngineer
