O-rings are about $5-6. Could be the spring inside broken too.

It doesn't make sense though that it worked before and not now. It's not like the O rings dry out in a month or so... Is it possible that the receiver prongs on the engine got bent somehow and out of alignment? Or maybe the clip that presses down is not opening up enough to clip on? It's got to be something simple.

well I compressed the inside of connector with a screw driver...then measured how far it went in and it is the exact lenth of the prong to go in. both sides work fine...then I try the part to pug onto...and only 1/3 the way is all

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

hey all, i am just waiting on the fuel filter bowl to come in and she should be ready to run..i have the gas tank, line, connector all together..i put those old bolts in there to shake it up and get some of the old stuff out with some carb cleaner...well i later came to realize...i can't just poor out the bolts...so i have to get a magnet to get them...or something very long to pick them up out of there :)
i have to find a way to hook the motor up in a container to see if it will run...can i hook it up in some water...and pull it with out gas to see if water comes out the exhaust?

Well, without the fuel filter bowl...guess you could put it in a trash can almost full of water, gravity feed some gas into the carb and it should run for a little while...long enough to make sure the water pump is pumping. Make sure the water in the can/barrel covers at least 3/4's of the leg. I always count the nuts/bolts going into a tank to make sure they all come back out...sometimes you have to do a little shaking, inverting, rapping to get a stubborn one out. Sounds like you're pretty close...read the post on adjusting carbs to make sure your baseline high and low speed needle settings are correct, can be frustrating if they are too far off.

Have you cleaned the carburetor yet? You probably should so you won't be disappointed when you finally get it all ready for the "first pull". What was the solution to the connector problem?
Curious,

Yeah, I'm wondering what happened with the connector also?

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

ok, so the status of the motor is that it now needs a carb kit. the needle valve that lets the gas into the carb has a rubber tip that seems to be swoolen a little...and it is the old style without a spring...so it sticks when closed...therefore not letting gas in. the lower unit leaks really bad. so i drained the lower unit, and have to get a lower unit seal kit. the upper section of the lower unit....the part left after taking the lower part off to get to the impeller...there is no seal there...i would imagine that is where the spaghetti seal goes, but that is where a lot of the LU oil came out is in that section...the only areas that i am not sure how to remove are the bushings where the shift rod and drive shaft go into...anyone know how those come out? it seems like you would have to hammer them out with maybe a dowel rod or something, but i don't wanna ruin it. also...the drive gears....on one end...the gear came off...and now i can't get the set up back into the lower part...is there a picture anywhere of this?

let me know what info you all have

Re: just got a 54 evrinrude fleetwin 7.5hp help please

here is the latest update...brought the motor to fred's house on saturday...after quite a while..we figured out that my carb rebuild job pretty much sucked. luckily he had a carb that woudl fit mine..we put it on there...and she fired right up and kept running...so i brought it out by cuivre island in the slew..and hit to the water...i got my 12ft jon boat to go a max of 3.2mph haha. needless to say...the carb really needs to be adjusted. fred it looking at my carb to see what is going on...once he lookes into it...then we will take it from there. we plan to go to a lake and get everything set on it. yet another task is going to be in the very very very near future..my adapter definately has bad o rings....it was shooting out gas when i unplugged it...the gas part is getting caught on the o-ring..and not sealing...so i had my tank in the garage all night...and it definately leaked out a little, and made my garage reek. so needless to say..the wife was not happy about that...so i put the tank outside. the good news is that my boat floats with the new transom, and all those bolts through it. i will keep you all posted, and i will put some pics up when it is done :)

Change those o-rings before you head out. An air loss will cause it to run crappy.

You've done a lot of good work on that motor and you have a good one. You did not do a bad job on the carb for never having done one. Lots of guys on here me included have had to take one back apart again to clean something we were sure was clean. I found a little gunk still in the main jet and that is probably your problem. That carb I loaned you needs to be adjusted with the boat in the water and I am not sure the packing nuts are all that tight either, but it sure made your motor run good. check with Brannan's as they may have those orings in stock. I know the motor ran good on my tank so you may have a major leak on your's We can take my tank when we go down to Winter. Fred

Glad to hear you got it running. Just a few minor details now. You have done a great job with that motor. Just remember it is addicting. When my wife mentions the three outboards I own I point to her shoe closet. I would love to see that motor run. When you and Fred going to George Winter? Give me a ring and I will meet you guys out there.

STL, tell you wife to be glad that your shed does not look like my shed!

Then she'll think that 3 is a good thing... !

got it running pretty good tonight the two of us together. He got the new orings in the connector and it works like a charm. I recleaned his carb and reset one of the points as it was a bit wide. Purrs like a kitten. He took a little video so he may post it later. Thanks everyone for encouraging him. He did a lot of good work on that motor.
