Re: just got a boat

You should have got a puppy instead.
Most likely the GM based 120-140 Hp. inline 4. I know i`ll get stepped on but FOR TESTING ONLY ,you could get away with it .
Non marine parts install in a boat = no insurance coverage
Ask any claims adjuster. But if you do feel the need to use automotive parts you`ll need this checklist.
Name of owner and insurance policy number
Number of persons aboard
Name and address of all persons onboard
Next of kin of all persons
Attorney w/ power of attorney

Omc Drive & engine. Never run it above idle with the prop not fully down. Bad things will happen !

Re: just got a boat

Ken,
From what I can tell looking at my Selco manual and trying to compare pictures in there to your photo it is a GM 2.5L or 3.0L 4 cyl engine.

I see that the engine compartment is pretty open. If you take precautions like making sure you have no fumes building up you should be able to have tried the automotive starter but as has been said this is not something you want to do beyond a test.

There was another good comment here about the drive. The OMC drives have their transmission in the bottom of the drive so the engine is connected and a shaft is turning all the time in the stern drive. You never want to run the engine with the drive tilted up or you put too much strain on the universal joint.

You should also check the fluid in the sterndrive. (Caveat: the following is correct for my OMC drive. My manuals indicate it would be the same for yours but I cannot tell from the picture you have)

On the top of the drive you should see what looks like a big screw head. This is the dipstick for the fluid for the stern drive. Unscrew it and you have a very short dipstick (1-2 inch).

If you do not have fluid in the drive you probably do not want to start the engine or you could damage the drive.

Hate to see you get it started only to create a problem in the drive.

Let us know how it goes.

Re: just got a boat

morning Ken-
Here is my 2 bits worth, do you have any one that rebuilds starters and altenators handy as this could be cheaper?
since you were able to turn it over by hand you know its not siezed up, so I would start with the basics to get it running before you throw lots of money at it. probably bad gas and filter, pump it out, add new filter, charge battery or replace and clean all the terminals good, make sure theres oil and it is not milky, engine and leg.
clean and set points, check rotor and cap (wipe any moisture/scrape electrodes if lots of build up)
If you then get it running and you are confident in the boat then through a tune up and fresh parts at it.
good luck
