Hi Guys, I am new here and I just got a boat from my grandma for a 4.3GPA. I didnt even know i was getting one but i love the water and my boat but am looking for a new engine and don't really know how much Horsepower it can have and how many people. I currently have a 25hp merc on the back of my 15foot tri hull boat. I want something fast and to keep up with the others on the lake. I also go tubing alot with friends and just chill. Can you please tell me some stuff i should get for the boat or some goodies that will last on my boat? I have over $500 to spend and grandma will buy new engine for me. Can you guys please help?

Thanks,

Re: Just got a boat?

I got the a boat just like yours. I have a 14' trihull but mine it powered with a 50hp. put some pics up of your boat you'll get a lot more help if we all know what it looks like. There should be a plate in the boat that sayes the max hp rating and weigh. near the driver seat/trasom. Give up more info on the boat. For 500 i would look into a fish finder or some new gear for the boat switches, seats, lights, what every your into it's your to do what you wish.

YS, Just make sure the boat is safe for the other riders and yourself.
Check with the local Fish and Game to find out all the saftey stuff you need in your boat.

Thanks man and all you guys for your help. I have my Florida boating license and a fire extinguisher so I am set. Should i get speakers in the boat? I will be going to my dock today and will upload some pics of the beauty.lol. again thank you all so much for helping me. And would a fish finder be necessary because i do go fishing alot and what other stuff is it worth the money to get a permanent gas tank installed?
I had to work my *** of to get that GPA with all the highschool courses.. Now i can relax

Thanks,

Way to go Yamaha!

Produceguy and Veritis Honus gave you the best advice you will ever get. You too, smallboatlover. One appears to be accomplished.

Keep up the good work and maybe someday you will have the privlidge in giving your Grandma a ride on your yacht and turning into a good man.

What's your location? Good Luck!

I currently fish in Lake Osborne and Lake Ida i will be going into a tournament in lake Okeechobee. should I get some speakers on my boat or upgrade the engine? Also how could i get my engine to produce a rooster tail like a 250Mercury? The sherrifs on my lake fly and I love the rooster tale. Any advice?

WTG on the 4.3, quite an accomplishment. Also, welcome to the forum. You have a very good grandma. We should all be so fortunate. As far as a new motor goes, you didn't say if the replacement would be brand new or new to you. Consider the controls and cables you have when replacing. They may not work on your new power plant. A 4 stroke will be much better on fuel and run much quieter (etec 2 stroke being the exception). And, you can't relax yet. There's college, a job, house , kids, mortgage etc. etc. etc. You can relax when your 80.:D

Thanks Jeep Man, For the kind words and for the help and I am looking for a used for-stroke and yes I am looking to be a lawyer when i am older so time to get going on job and school. Thanks to all of you and what would we do without our grandma and always giving us advice? And i know a lot about outboard engines just not 2-strokes.I had my grandpa teach me all about boating and then he passed when i was 11years old back in 2003. I have learned a lot fro him and hope to learn more from you guys.

WOW good job on the GPA, keep up the good work. You are a lucky guy to have a cool grandma like that. Great way to reward hard work in the classroom.

I agree that a fish finder would be a nice addition. There are GPS/sonar combo units that are handy to mark your fishing spots.:)

An electric trolling motor could be added too, not a bad idea to have a backup to the gas motor on board.

Congratulations, and get some photos up when you can:D

Congrats and welcome!! If Grandma is going to buy you a new motor, then go max. allowable for your boat because you might decide at some point to move from a tri-hull to deep-V.

Enjoy!

I second the trolling motor idea! Back when I did a ton of fresh water fish my trolling motor got me back to the ramp 4 different times when having engine trouble. Just make sure you have a separate battery for it!

Congrats and enjoy!

I may be the only one to point this out...But...
What about tags & registration & insurance? That may eat up your 500.00 quickly, lol
How about running it as is for awhile? Enjoy what you have until you know exactly what you want to do with it before spending G'mas nest egg, lol.
You may find that the $$ she will add to a new (or newer) OB would be better served going towards a whole nother rig, like a vintage Starcraft.

This is actually good advice. You could also be like me and start getting the "I need a bigger boat" syndrome...

That's VERY good advice. Roll with what you have for a little while and you will know exactly what you will want to add to the boat.

Make sure you have all your safety equipment (life vests, horn, flares, etc.) and registration and all that expensive stuff first tho.

Congrats on the boat and 4.3!

I got that after the third run with my first boat. Got a bigger boat and after the first run, got the syndrome again.

Re: Just got a boat?

I'm still trying to figure out how you get a gpa above 4.0.

Around here, 4.0 is the best you can do on a scale of 0 thru 4.

Or are we using a scale of 0 thru 7 ??

Re: Just got a boat?

Roscoe - Most high schools have classes that are more difficult that are graded on a 5 point scale so an "A" equals 5 pts, "B" equals 4 pts, etc.
General level classes are still offered that are a little easier but are graded on a standard 4 pt scale.

Re: Just got a boat?

They are based on a 4.0 scale but with me missing the cut off date i am only in 8th and will all my high school credit classes it gives me a 4.3GPA. I have all advanced classes and right now have 5 college gredits already. i am in in 8th grade and taking algebra2 and biology and already learing 4different languages.
