Along with all the stuff for the boat, daddies little dependent got me a new HP Pavilion dm3. This thing is sweat, best lab top I have ever had. Its super fast, thin and lite and is a 64 bit system, plus it has a sweat aluminum satin body instead of plastic! The battery last a long time! It has just under a 14inch display so its a great size for sitting on the couch watching Tv and surfing the net!

the best part is i picked it up a Wally Mart for $498!

just had to show it off a little!

Nice! Very sweet!

Question - does it get hot on your lap? The last one I had was uncomfortable and I'd put a magazine between "me" and the laptop.

No it dosnt get hot at all, It just gets warm, but it dosnt get to the point were it feels like its going to burn like some laptops. I think the aluminum body helps plus HP designed the air vents on the side rather then under so all the hot air is blown out the sides.

Congrats man. I had a 64bit OS and returned it for a 32bit because I couldn't do anything with it. Everything is 32 bit. No games, no programs, nothing runs on a 64 bit system. That's why they're so cheap.

Windows 7 is way overpriced in my opinion. It's just another buggy version of Windows. I am not a fan of feeding the Bill Gates machine. Not with reviews like this:

Win7 x64 came on my Thinkpad that was issued to me at work. It is a little frustrating finding where they moved everything to. I've found that once I learned how to use the new features It's quite productive. Finding print drivers could be a challenge in some cases, but I can't really blame MS because HP doesn't have a driver (or forces me to use their Universal driver).

I read that review and here's what I think about each point.

1. Can't pin what we want to the taskbar.

Ok, it's a new feature for Windows that doesn't do everything the reviewer wants it to do. I can roll the windows down in my truck with the key fob remote but I can't roll them back up.

2. No Upgrade Install From XP to Windows 7.

Any computer geek worth his salt would never do an upgrade anyway. We always do a fresh install and poopoo anyone doing a rolling upgrade. We act like Mike Holmes does when he finds a illegal splice.:D

3. Ejecting Devices Requires Too Many Clicks.

Not true. It works just like XP. Even the author admits he goofed that one.

5. Windows Media Player Blows.

Windows media player has always sucked in my opinion. Why would I expect to finally fall in love with the one in Windows 7. Last time I checked, Windows Media Player is an application they bundle with the OS for free, not the OS which is what's being reviewed here.

6. Sleep and Hibernation Are Still Crapshoots.

It always has been, with any OS, even Linux. It works fine on my laptop though. I think the hardware vendors should take at least some of the blame for this. I think the only way to tackle this problem 100% is for the OS vendor to also control the hardware ala Apple. Personally, if I were to buy a new laptop I would do a little research just to see what kind of problems people were having. Desktop users shouldn't care.

7. Control Panel Is a Mess.

I'm not too crazy about the Control Panel either but once I learned where the few items I use in there are I quit caring.

For the record, I'm not too happy with Microsoft for releasing Vista (among other reasons). It wasn't ready. Win7 seems fine so far though. One should just do a little research before committing to it since it may not run certain games or work with some hardware. The applications and drivers will catch up soon enough.

Re: Just Got Me A New Puter!

Sounds great and if you are comfortable with Win7 64 bit, that's all that matters.

I am going the other way today. I have an ancient 'puter that I darn near threw out a couple of times, which I am resurrecting. It has a 650 mHz AMD chip in it, with a whopping 98 mB of ram! Fortunately, the motherboard has additional slots, which will allow me to put some DDR 3200 in it. I may have to flash the bios to get it to read anything over 256 mB, but that's OK - it will make a good shop computer.

As you use it, let us know how you like Win7. I am curious about it, but have XP running on everything that I own (4 desktops, 1 laptop), just because I know it will work with everything that I need to use.

Um.....BS on that statement.

I run a school's network with 100's of computers. There are ALWAYS bugs in every OS, even Snow Leopard.....

I've gone to W7 64 bit and as long as you aren't trying to print with a 20 year old printer, or use it with a 10 year old computer everything runs smooth as silk.

hell I threw W7 64 on my dads Pentium 3 and everything loaded up just fine.

You obviously have some kind of bias. W7 is was vista should have been and I also would recommend grabbing it. But go to Newegg.com and get it for 110 bucks.

That review you posted, whoever wrote it should be ashamed of themselves. They obviously only played with it for less than a day.

You can pin anything you want to the taskbar. ANY FOLDER AT ALL can be pinned to it.

Windows media player doesn't suck.......I mean it allows you to STREAM music from your desktop to ANYWHERE you want, even my phone!

lastly you can change the control panel to look exactly like in XP. When in control panel look at the top right of the window and look for "view by" and make it "small icons"

Also if you really want a simple control panel:

right click on your desktop (or any folder) and click NEW, then Folder....then name it " GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} " without the quotes and there you go.

I hate when freakin NON computer people write technology articles. Makes me wana track them down and kick their ***!

Re: Just Got Me A New Puter!

I have a new laptop with Windows 7, 64 bit on it. Ran fine right out of the box.
Hibernates just fine. First laptop I've had that I feel comfortable with just closing the lid and putting it on the shelf when I'm done with it.
Not bad for a $399 Compaq.

Re: Just Got Me A New Puter!

The only problem I had when switching over to 64 bit is that neither Epson nor Microsoft wrote new drivers for an old scanner I had. The good part was that a new scanner had twice the resolution at half the cost of my old one. Microsoft seems to have gone to great lengths to make Windows 7 compatible with older hardware. My printer is an old DeskJet that wasn't in the library after installing the OS. When I had to click, Check for a Driver Online, Microsoft had it.

Also, if you run into a program that worked with an older version of windows, but doesn't like Windows 7. Right click on the icon or link and select Troubleshoot Compatibility. Here you can select any older version of windows for the program to run under. I had to do this with my favorite photo editor and it now runs fine.

Plus Windows 7 has some great features, Aero - for scrolling through open (or closed) windows, Snap - to work in side-by-side windows, Peek - to see your desktop through open windows, DirectX 11 for games, the Snipping Tool to capture shots of anything displayed on the desktop, TRIM support for solid state disks. I actually miss Windows 7 when I'm at work using XP.

Re: Just Got Me A New Puter!

I have updated all my computers to windows 7, two are 32 bit and the new one is 64 bit. They have all run super smooth since, actually up-grading to Windows 7 fixed issues with my other two computers.

My desk top is an all in one HP Touch Smart IQ775 (the first model of the Touch Smart) I love it!!! Having a touch screen makes surfing the net that much more lazy! Plus it really helps teach my 2yr old and 3yr old how to use the computer They luv using paint! Windows 7 made the touch screen run so much better.

My other computer is a HP Touch smart tm2000. Its a tablet/laptop, It runs great on windows 7 also...i use it for 3D modeling with Auto Desk inventor, it has a stylist that really makes 3D drafting alot better plus the screen rotates 180 degrees and fold back over the key board so you only see the screen, great for watching movies or reading digital books

The last computer is the new one HP Pavilion dm3 and it is used for internet use only, so I can keep the other two computers with all my important stuff clean of viruses and bugs. (The desk top still gets online but just for the kids stuff). It had windows 7 straight out of the box and is 64 bit. It runs 32 bit programs just fine!

I use a new Dell at work and it has XP, I feel like its stepping back in time, XP is so old! Plus I hate the way Dell computers run, never had a good experience with one, as you can see I am a HP man, their computer seem to run better and long, better designed and more stylish.

I don't want to use this thread to bash Win 7 because I've only used it at school and it works fine. But all we do with it is school stuff, no games of course. I do like how it seems to boot up fast from what I would call a slow computer. I'm impressed with that.

However, I'm talking about my experience with Vista 64 and how it didn't run a single game I own. That's not BS, thats my direct personal experience, and obviously, the experience of many others. I called Tigerdirect and told them my problem, called Best Buy, called friends, everyone said just get XP 32 bit and your problems will be solved. I did and it installed every single game I own flawlessly. Vista 64 did not install a single one.

So no, it doesn't have to be a 20 year old printer, it can be something as simple as FSX, the most recent version of flight simulator, or IL2 1946, an old, but recently updated WW2 flight simulator or any game older than 2008 or 2009, won't run on a 64 bit system because they are 32 bit games. This is a simple fact. This, unfortunately, is not BS and I can personally attest to it as I tried to install about 20 games made since 2001 and not a single one worked with Vista 64 and every single one worked great with XP 32 bit.

I'm a little curious as to how much computer gaming knowledge you have if you don't know simple things like this. Maybe you aren't a big game person. If you aren't then I wouldn't expect you to know this. But every single person I spoke with knew exactly what my problem was. And they were right. I'm still running Win XP in 32 bit and I love it. Every single piece of software written today, and for the last 8 years, has been written to work with this OS directly, not having to try to jam it into a newer one under the auspices of running "as" an older OS.

But I don't want to take away from this guys new computer purchase. I know he's loving it and I am glad he got it. I think he got a great deal. I'm interested in how he likes it down the road. I always have been amazed with laptop computers and how you can jam all that desktop hardware into something that fits into a briefcase. I just never had a reason to own one, but of course I know TONS of people who do. I think it's a beautiful piece of equipment and I know he's going to enjoy it for a long time to come. I just wish him luck with the 64 bit OS. The reason they put that is so it will recognize more than 3 gigs of RAM. I have 8 gigs for my computer but 4 aren't even installed because XP doesn't recognize them. If I ever did Windows 7 I would attempt to install the rest of my RAM. It would be nice to be able to use all that I purchased.

I'll have to research whether or not Win 7 in 64 bit really can run 32 bit games. I know Vista sure didn't but the OP says his 64 bit runs 32 bit games. I was told that is not possible ever because they're not compatible ever. Guess I have a lot to learn.

I play FSX on mine all the time. The only reason to go with 64 over 32 is if you have more than 3.5 gigs of memory, so it doesn't really matter I suppose. However I current have the following games installed on my 64bit system and it's fine:

Batman Arkham Asylum
Bad Company 2 Beta
Fear 1
Fear 2
NFS Shift
Modern Warfare 1
Modern warfare 2
FSX

The only game I had a slight problem with was Fear 1, I just needed a 64 bit installer which was hard to track down.

Re: Just Got Me A New Puter!

I would normally say you were lying but I know for a fact FSX has worked for some people in Vista 64. It didn't work for me. In fact, it wouldn't even install!

That being said, I don't have the money for a new OS anyway and all my games and my computer in general are rocking along just fine, I have no reason to switch. When I get a job and income maybe I'll switch then. I live by the philosophy, "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!"

Solar, how's she treatin' ya?

Its running like a dream!

One thing I will never understand is that a complete install of a OS is $200 and up but you cane pick up a hole new computer with it for less then $500, and its a good solid machine, they should sell the computers without an OS for like $250 so every one who already owns a complete install of a new OS can load it there self. I could save so much money that way!

Never buy a retail copy of an OS. ALWAYS do go buy an OEM copy on sites like Newegg.
