hello to everyone
i am new to the site and i'm glad to have join this wounderful community
so far i think is a great source of knowlege and good laughs
I just got my first boat is a 18 ft malibu with a 150 suzuki outboard
I like to contribute and tell you my mistake :D

I was boating yesterday at the mouth of the river it was a beautuiful day
things were going great till i got a phone call on my cell
got talking and decided to turn off the motor

after 5 min of chatting decided to head back to shore

I went to pump the primer bulb and as well use the warm up lever and the electric shoke well you know what happens after lol
I flooded the engine and after trying to get it going for a while wth no luck and the sun was going down i satrtd to worry:redface:
lucky there were some guys in the area and they tow me back to shore

still to this point i believe it was my fault for using the choke i guess
still trying to learn but I got the boat bug and I love to be on the water
anyways that's one of my rcent mistakes lol
cheers

Re: just introducing myself

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your misfortune. Hopefully by sharing this you may save someone else from doing the same thing. You really shouldn't need to do anything except turn the key unless it has been shut down for hours. Glad you made it back to shore without too much trouble.

Re: just introducing myself

When I got my first pontoon I had a similar thing happen, the second week I had it we decided to take the boat way up the river near the dam to do some late night channel cat fishing. First thing we forgot to fill up the spare tank, so we had about a 9 gallons of gasoline. We went up found us a good spot and anchored down. Fished and decided to move, went on way upstream and consumed about half our gasoline so I decided this was as close as we got as it was a good ways back to the ramp.

Threw out the anchors and fished a while more after not having much luck (finding the channel!) we go to move again and this time i do the same thing as tropical, flip the warm up lever and choke it.

Needless to say it wouldn't start, an hour passes and I try the exact same thing, still won't start... By now we're slowly drifting back toward the main channel and getting restless/ill.

I end up calling the guy I bought it from telling him about our situation, by now its past 1 am. We try again and still can't get her started, this boggles him because its never given him a problem.

Eventually he calls back to check on us and we're still adrift. He hops on his boat and comes way up the river to where we are figuring we are going to have to tow her back in. He boards the boat and we talk a few minutes, he sits down at the helm turns the key and she fires right up.

I still haven't lived that day down ;)

Re: just introducing myself

New here as well, and must say it does seem like a good group. My contribution to stupid will have to be last summer when I bought a new (to me) 16' w/ a 40 h.p. Merc. Came with 1 six gallon tank, which, of course would never do. Went out, bought new tank, new Merc fitting, put fitting in, filled 'er up, threw my lovely wife in the boat and off we go. In time, engine started to sputter, wifey gets worried look on face, tell her not to worry, just need to switch tanks. Well, apparently someone had previously switched gas line fitting to OMC. Those tanks don't work well to pour out of. From now on I'll always make sure the fittings will plug together. Lesson learned.
