My and my buddy were heading out for an early morning trip sat. got to the launch and it was still dark. I had him hold the boat while i parked the truck....on my trip back he was standing in the bow and i took my normal hop into the boat and splash.....up to my ankles in water. let me tell you it was some cold water. some how we forgot to put the plug in.......of course the bilge wouldn't work so i had the brillant idea of starting the motor and getting under way to get the water out...it worked but i felt bad for my buddy who had to kneel down and reach inder the splashwell to put the plug in oncw we got going. Lets just say we headed back to the launch once we got her empty....NEVER AGAIN WILL I ASSUME THAT ANYONE HAS PUT THE PLUG IN BUT ME>

There are 2 types of boaters. Those that have left the plug out and those that will eventually leave the plug out.

Back in the '60s, we were selling self-bailing drain plugs at the boat shop.

They looked like a flattened piece of hose. Underway, any water in the bilge would force the hose open, and out.

They didn't work too well, though. Any piece of trash that made it into the hose...and got lodged...would hold the hose open. You can picture the end result....

3. Those that will leave the plug out again

The self bailing plugs I remember looked kind of like the flapper on a toilet tank but I haven't seen them for at least a decade possibly decades

I'm hoping maybe there's room for a fourth category...

4. Those who read the "no plug" tales of woe here at iBoats and have formulated a way of always doing the same things in the same order and making bloody sure the plug is in...
...and also making bloody sure that multiple backups are available at a moment's notice.

I'm trying to join this group. Haven't left the plug out yet. I've been using a checklist to make launch and retrieve repeatable.
I... uuhhh... don't have the multiple backup plugs available yet. Still have some work to do.

Welcome to the club.. Ive been inducted a couple times.. wait until you join the forget the wheelchocks club(last weekend).. thats a good time.. also the transom straps club is quite a club to be a part of as well..

ya we had one of those on our zodiac, but it also had a backup plug (rubber plug) that you put in from the inside aswell. the flapper would leak if something got cought in it but otherwise worked quite well.

On an old ski boat we lost one of those nifty "flip up" rubber plugs while we were skiing. Stopped to pick up our skier, and before we knew it there was 4" of water under our feet.

Got the boat going and cleaned it out as we headed to shore.

We nicknamed the boat the swimming pool after that one....

navis, isnt that a lil extreme?!......good idea though.

i installed a "garboard plug" in mine ........heres a site http://www.globalsources.com/manufacturers/Garboard-Plug-Kit.html

i used the brass one since it also has a screw in brass plug.........i havent tested it yet --- waiting for the water to warm up a bit.

the plug has a ball inside that closes when stopped and falls back to open when under way........i made a lil screen to keep debris from keeping the ball open.

im in the club.. twice now, once on my own, once with my dad...

The one on my own wasnt even my boat, it was the workboat at the marina i work at. Was going to tow afew big logs that floated in overnight. dumped the boat off the hydrohost, started the engine, started motoring out of the slip when i saw water at my feet gunned it back to the hoist, with the engine still running i started the hoist, then killed the motor well it was comming back up. put the plug in and then tried again...

One with my dad we were dumping our lakeboat in at a local lake, The stern is all enclosed, so we didnt see anything at first, about halfway to our cabin we started seeing water seeping through the compartment at the stern. opened it and sure enough water was filling up. did the old gun it and drain the water, followed by shoving the plug back in..

Just bought one to replace my cheezy plastic one. I worry a bit about sand or a weed finding it's way into the passage and clogging up the ball-stop

yep thats the exact one ive got.............i made a lil screen for mine....i still havent tried it wthout the brass plug..gonna wait till the water is a lil warmer.............that is unless i forget it between now and then. if it works right i should never know i forgot the plug till i get back to the ramp lol.

thats what i have but without the one way ball valve. i just screw in the plug when i go and unscrew it when i get back.
