Well, took the plunge and leased a covered slip at my local marina. Any advise or tips are appreciated.

You are probably going to have spyders to contend with. You will need to spray once a month.( your Boat )

Get a lift. I am in the process of buying a used lift now.

I've never personally had my boat in a slip but I've been around the marina for long enough to chip in a few things. There'll be lots of spiders, mosquitos and bats chasing the mosquitos especially at night. Learn your neighbors and get their phone numbers and make sure they've got yours...noone wants to watch a boat slowly go under and there's no one in the marina's office. The keys to your boat DO come out and they DON'T stay on the boat. Your beer may dissappear if you don't take it with you. We've caught underagers stealing beer before. Just push em in and throw them a preserver if they're struggling LOL.

Oh, and if you've made good friends with someone (or can't stand them, for that matter) put a "For Sale" sign on their boat with a ridiculously low price and their cell number on it when they're on vacation. Love that trick!

The birds love to poop on your boat all the time. " Got the drivers seat again ! "

It is in the non existant fine print of your lease.

Spider spray for the dock and your dock lines. Stick some dryer sheets in out of the way corners on the boat. Spiders hate dryer sheets.

Best way to keep the crud from building up on the bottom.

Congrats, and welcome to 'the club'.
Good advice here.
I'll add this: a covered slip is great, but a cockpit cover should still be used to protect the interior from nature.
Also, my slipmates write their cell# on the piling cap next to their boat. Makes it easy to contact anyone if a problem crops up, and it's not obvious to passer-bys.

Do you have tides to contend with and are they floating docks? If yes to both questions, no problem. If you have tides and stationary docks, that means you will have to allow slack line to compensate for the tide. That also means leaving fenders out at all times.

Check the dock slip and surrounding slips for leeching of current from the shore power. That's a quick way to eat up anodes on the boat.

If you have a shore water connection on your boat, leave it off while away. Busted hose bibs sink vessels quickly.

+1 on getting your neighbors numbers and giving them yours. Add an inexpensive high water alarm in your bilge. If/when your livaboard neighbors hear the alarm, they can call you before your boat sits on the bottom of the marina.

Don't forget your boat is sitting there. There are boats at my marina that I have NEVER seen anyone aboard or leave the dock. Use that thing every chance you get and you'll never mind paying for the slip.

I know someone who fits this EXACTLY. They have a 39ft Sea Ray with internet, satelite, radar...the works. Didn't even take it out last year to my knowledge. It's in a primo covered slip too.

Figure out if you are on the windward or lee side of the storm patterns. If you figure out what kind of storms you are exposed to, you will know when to take extra percautions. Use plenty of big bumpers or even auto tires, if you need them.

Remember, lines usually do not snap, unless they chafe, so use chafing gear where lines run over docks, railings, gunwales etc. Use redundant lines when expecting a storm. I am exposed to the NE. When we get a storm, I will add a center cleat spring line, and an extra bow line. I also frequently add a line to the front eyelet, and tie it off as far away as possible on the dock. This is an extra spring line and a bow line combination. These are in addition to my bow, stern and 2 spring lines. I run a 5/8" nylon rear spring line and Bow line, and 1/2" lines everywhere else. The 5/8 lines are more resistant to chafe and stronger.

BTW, my SS cleat was bent a bit in one storm.

I used to tie my small boat up with heavy lines with gavlanized steel snap hooks on the stainless bow and stern eyes. After a storm, the galvanized steel was nearly worn thru...I saw the wear, and as I unhooked the bow, the snap hook broke in the middle.

My boat is docked at lake Erie. I make sure I check it every week at least weather I use it or not. I always install two bilge pumps and hook direct so they cannot be shut off by mistake. Had one for a while and almost lost my boat when the float stuck. So two always and always double batteries to draw from in case one goes bad. Im also in good shape because there is a web cam focusing on my boat. Even if its a 2 1/2 hour drive,LOL.

This is a GREAT idea, and wouldn't it be nice if every marina would install cameras that broadcast to a website? I would be willing to pay extra for that service. Want to check on boat, but not drive 2 hours? Log onto site and have a gander at it!

I dock at the conneault port on Erie. Very nice place and good fishing. But they have 6 web cams and one surveys the whole place. Always pick a site I can watch. Makes it easier on me. LOL

I think there are systems you can install on a pole and be able to access it from your smart phone.
