just my luck. I bought a 73 135 hp Johnson, and new controls to replace the 72 125 hp that had bad rings.. Now that I have it mounted and hooked up I was looking to have some fun.. But alas, it seems as though THIS motor has low compression (50 lbs) in 1 cyl too.. this one is getting parts.. You can see tiny bits of metal in one of the new plugs so im assuming its rings.. Is it possible that, assuming the bores are within tolerance (not real likely), I can just rering this thing?? or is it definatly going to need a piston? Its getting to be fishing season here in iowa, and if i cant get this thing together on the cheap, it may have to wait till late fall before I can do anything with it.. which would be a bummer. I have the manual for it, but im just wondering if the powerhead has to come off "if" the bores are good.. its the top right cyl looking from the back.

it's all going to depend on how early you caught the problem and how well a honing can clean it all up.

cross your fingers.

Unless you can manage to split the crank on this engine w/o removal, you'll almost certainly need to take the PH off though to hone the cylinder. You'll need to remove the rod & piston assembly to to an adequate job with the hone.

I've got a 73 135hp setting here needing the same thang done but when the ring went on it, it ate up the pistion head real bad. On that engine the piston rings are real close to the edge of the piston head and can do alot of damage before you realize it. I was lucky enough to run up on a 75 115hp head that I just bolted up on my old 135 foot.
Hope your luck is better than mine good luck.

You absolutely have to take the powerhead off and strip it almost to the bare bones to get the pistons out. It will need a new piston, plus whatever.
