Re: Just picked up my first Starcraft, and my first restoration project

I was out looking at the boat today and I might not even repaint it. It's got character.

I'm going to try and source some marine grade plywood for the deck this weekend so I have it on hand. Since I don't have a deck in the boat at the moment, I'm also going to get some posterboard and make templates.

The goal is to have this boat ready to roll by August, as I'll be vacationing at the beach then.

Fun, fun:

Keep in mind that there are almost as many varieties of marine grade ply as there are trees in the forest! True marine grade ply is very expensive --- up hear it'll run a couple a hundred a sheet depending on grade and make.

If price is important ... You just want to try to get void free ply such as aruco from Lowes and then do what most are doing, seal it up with spar varnish or epoxy.

I'm thinking about using aluminum for the deck. Never have to worry about rot again...

I had that notion as well, but finding aluminum the right size has been problematic. I figure if I coated it with some epoxy grip paint, it would be perfect. I've also considered stainless steel if I could find it cheap enough.

For the transom cap If you are close to a window company check them out, there are sizes of channeling that should allow you to completely cover the top with one piece. I did ths to a few boats over the years and worked as good as a factory cap. Good luck looks like a nice project.

I might make some progress on it this weekend. I'm on call so I have to stay in town while my wife and the kids head the 2 hours away to the in-laws for Easter dinner.

I've been collecting parts and have two glassers to demolish and scavenge.

I've been mocking up some ideas with the bow of the boat, and I think I am going to keep it enclosed. I've also been debating on adding a hatch and a storage locker for an anchor and some boat fenders.

stainless steel if I could find it cheap enough i'll take Oxymorons for 20, ALex ;)

i tend to agree with the folks who note that the orig floor lasted 40+ yrs even without any epoxy etc. i don't plan to live much more than 40 more years, so plywood with epoxy it is for my boats..........
