It's been a while since we?ve been in the boating scene. My wife and I had a 20 Trophy walkaround and sold it shortly after having our first son due to lack of time. Now three little boys later it's time to get back on the water. We have always enjoyed being on the water whether fishing, crabbing or just out for a cruise. I?ve always wanted a CC and came across this 1981 20 Mako CC with a 200hp Yamaha. I purchased the boat from a gentleman that bought the boat from Maryland Port Authority. He was told that the Police issued boats where built a little heavier. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. If anyone has any info on this please let me know. The boat seems to be very sold and I cant find and soft spots in the hull what so ever. It seems to be real solid except for some bangs on the port side. He was told that Maryland Port Authority would board ships and boats always using the port side thus the reason for the bangs on that side. The engine is newer I think 1989 but not sure. The numbers on the engine are 200 ETLJ 666 L 401159. If anyone can tell me anything about this engine that would be great. I?m really just looking for info on reliability things to watch out for etc. Also if someone could tell me the yr of the engine with the numbers that I listed. Thank you

sounds like a good rig. those old Mako hulls were good ones. As long as the PO left the plug out when it was on the trailer, should be no issues there.

A 1989 engine on a police boat is WAY past its expiration date. There are some law enforcement boats that get engines on a 2 or 3 year schedule... Although its very likely that engine never saw any commercial use, they probably had went through a couple already, and sold the hull off when the last one died. The first private owner probably put that engine on.

The engine was just put on it before I got it. It had a Mercury 150hp but it needed a rebuild so it was replaced with the Yamaha. The gentalman that I got it from ran the mercury for around 15 yrs before it getting tired. He then bought the yamaha used from a dealer and put that one on. Under the hood it is very clean with no corrosion.

It shouldn't be hard to find the engine year from that number, not that it matters, and Yam tries to get away from years. There also may be a plate near the bracket with the month and year of manufacture--which tells you little about its "age" since it might not have hit the water until a few years later. Just start with maintenance (unless your seller gives you reliable info of what he did) and keep it up: start with a new water pump, LU oil, plugs, water seperator, and whatever else may pertain to yours.

Yamaha owners manuals are on line (but you can't print them)

I would think that a 200 is on the powerful side for a 20' hull; if the time comes a smaller motor may save some fuel. Take a look at your prop (condition as well as size) and confirm its correct.

Old mako hull; new Yamaha motor, I wouldn't give either a second thought! That's a durable rig.
