Took the boat out sounded real good put in wot planed great ran great for about 100 yars then just quit. Started right back up same thing wot 100 yards quit. Tried to recrank and the starter would not engage. Touched the starter and it was very hot, it actually burned my hand. NOt sure if it is supposed to be that hot. Any ideas on both these problems?

surely the starter is disengaging after she fires right?

are you running a perm tank or a portable?

is the tank vented well?

i also read on another thread about a guy that had a piece of trash that was stopping up his pick up tube then dropping off when the sucktion was gone- just long enough for it to pick up fuel and then drift back then bam no fuel again.

ground cable have good connection?

sumtimes the ignition key doesn't return to 'run position' and keeps the starter engaged. if so...

The starter overheats and starts to seize, stalling the engine.

the starter would not stall the motor, the bendix is a centrifical unit, when the motor turn faster then the bendix, it throws the bendix down.

bad cable/weak power supply would cause the starter to heat up.
90% of starter problems are bad connections. remove and clean both ends of the battery cables, so that they are shiney, also the cable from the solenoid to starter. check for nicks in the cables. and make sure the connectors are on the wire good. the cable tend to corrode from the inside out, if nicked, corroded wires, and connections, heat up and cause resistance to the follow of electricity, thus the starter doesn't get enough. you can also take jumper cable pos battery post to large post on starter. with a good connection, the engine should spin. then if the starter is good clean everything and retest. then trouble shoot solenoid. starters can be rebuit at a starter/alternator shop, much cheaper than a new one.

also have the battery load tested at the auto parts store, free, i've had new batteries go bad

now back to why it stopped.
check your spark, and compression. make sure the vent is open on the fuel tank. you could have crud in the carbs, or have a failing power pack. it also could have run hot.

Re: just quits at wot

Ok I feel like an idiot. Used a wooden yard stick to see how much fuel I had. It only showed 1/2" of fuel. I am guessing that at wot it would at a point suck air instead of fuel since it was so low? I did find out I have no spark top left. All others perfect. Swapped coils and problem did not follow. 130 compression all 4 cylinders.
Bendix is staying up though on the flywheel. It will not go back down, so I am going to get the starter rebuilt. At a lost though on the spark
