as a kid, i never knew where the Christmas and Fall decoration colors came from, until later in life, and i traveled north in the late fall. we either have evergreens, or just bare trees, and brown dead leaves.

The wife and I are taking a train ride through western NC this weekend to check out the leaves. Hopefully we catch them in their full glory. We're looking forward to it.

Those are some beautiful pictures. Here in Texas most leaves are still green and usually hit the ground before they get pretty if ever they do.

In Quebec, one of the popular places to visit in the fall is Gatineau Park.

Here are a few pics from within the Park at MacKenzie King Estates (MacKenzie King was the Prime Minister of Canada in the 1930s)

Went back this weekend to visit the park and one of the lakes inside the park (Pink Lake) named after the first family from the 1830s who logged/lived in the area, not the green algae in it. It's a meromictic lake (meaning the layers of water do not intermix) and although it's 20 metres, or approx 66 feet at its deepest point, 13 meters and below is void of oxygen.

I'd say more than half the leaves from last week are now down on the ground.

Here are some pics I took around noon today.

Notice the coloration from the mass amounts of algae growing in the lake

Almost forgot. What would a day hiking be without some wildlife.

Here is a squirrel prepping for winter

And, here is the unique variety of the three-spined stickleback, which evolved from a saltwater variety when this lake was at one point interconnected with Atlantic Ocean that eventually evolved into the current freshwater species living in this lake.

For sure.. And in a lake with high levels of algae and absence of oxygen, this is apparently the only fish species that exists in the lake.
