'99 up Ford's have PI engines. It stands for Performance Improved. 4.6 went from 205 to 230 Hp and 5.4 went from 230 to 260 HP. Torque jumped significantly too.I have heard of tranny and transfer case problems in the dodges. Don't kow much about Chevies other than i prefer Fords.<br /><br />Bowfin

as a dodge mechanic there really isn't any major problems with our trucks. no more than chevy or ford. they all have good points and bad. i prefer a ford over any other but thats my opinion. i own a 4x4 ford regular cab 5.4 and i have pulled some big loads with it and it handles great. I've pulled an 18 wheeler w/ 53' trailer out of the mud once, trailer wasn't loaded of course

Thanks guys, I just want to know from folks who have had these types of trucks, the history, good/bad, etc. I figure 1997-2000 or depends on what I can afford. Heinz

"as a dodge mechanic there really isn't any major problems with our trucks"<br /><br />LOL.. That's almost funny. 2 transmissions and a rear differential in my 2001 in 16k miles before Chrysler bought it back under lemon law. Took it in on the 15th of the month, Dealer said it was the 8th truck Chrysler had bought back that month. That's just 1 dealership!. I'd never buy another Chrysler vehicle with an automatic. YMMV<br /><br />Bought a 2002 Ford, and it's had to have the cig lighter replaced.. now THAT's serious. :D <br />-Roger

Ya know!! I have heard all about those tranny problems with the Dodge trucks. I have a 2002 ram 2500 and it has been flawless. I pulled a heavy load all the way from Pa. to Colorado with it and the thing did not flinch. My gas milage could have been better. Cost me 500 bucks each way, Thats right 1000 smackers  .<br /><br />One big selling point for me when I bought the Dodge was the 7/70 warrenty. Normally I get a new truck every four or five years, but I like this one enough that I plan on driving it many years, till it wont go no more  <br /><br />Not gonna slam the other brands, I think we covered that fairly well in other threads.

I think the tranny problems are more related to what you are trying to tow and how you are doing it. I have talked to many Ford & Chevy owners with transmissions problems.<br /><br />I have owned three consecutive Dodge trucks and have put over 350,000 miles on them with not a dime spent on transmission problems.

I too have heard good and bad about all. I drive (at work) a 2000 F-450. (same as the 350 except with diff gear and heavier springs). I haul up to 14,500lbs. at a time. The truck has performed flawlessly! I have done routine maintenance and only normally expected repairs. It has over 113K on it now and it is still going strong. I think the key to longevity for a truck is to buy a truck that is "enough". Dont buy a 1/2 ton truck to pull your 5 ton boat. But most importantly do the MAINTENANCE!!! Change that oil!! Just my 2 cents worth. :D

Good point refrac.<br />Don't try to let a boy do a man's job as I call it.<br /><br />You can't never have enough truck but man you sure can have to little of a truck, then your stuck with a truck you don't like.<br /><br />I always did buy bigger than what I really needed but then I did not have to worry when it came time to needing it.

All of them are good American made trucks, it's up to your personnal tastes.<br /><br />Just whatever you do, please don't support a foriegn economy, and don't buy one of them imports!
